Job description
As a Senior Site Reliability Engineer - Quantum Computing (f/m/d), you will take end-to-end responsibility for the reliability, stability, and operability of our software that operates our quantum computers. You will act as a technical authority for system reliability, shaping how our quantum computers are operated, monitored, and evolved in production-like lab environments. This is an on-site position in Siegen or Hamburg, working closely with software engineers, firmware developers, physicists, and hardware engineers in an interdisciplinary environment.
- Own the reliability strategy for the quantum control and quantum program execution stack
- Define and continuously refine SLIs, SLOs, error budgets, and operational guardrails
- Design and evolve the observability architecture across software, infrastructure, and hardware-adjacent layers
- Lead incident response, post-mortems, and root cause analyses for critical system failures
- Proactively identify systemic risks and drive mitigation strategies
- Drive automation initiatives to reduce operational toil and improve system stability
- Establish and maintain operational standards, runbooks, and documentation
- Shape CI/CD and release processes with a strong focus on reliability and safe deployments
- Act as a trusted partner for development teams when designing production-ready systems
- Mentor engineers and raise reliability awareness across the organization
Requirements
- Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of professional experience in SRE, DevOps, Platform Engineering, or Systems Engineering
- Proven track record of operating and stabilizing complex, mission-critical systems
- Strong experience with containerized and orchestrated environments
- Hands-on experience with monitoring, alerting, and observability systems
- Experience leading incident response and driving post-mortem
- Strong technical documentation and architectural reasoning skills
- Creative mindset and enjoyment working in a multicultural and interdisciplinary team
- Ability to make sound engineering trade-offs under uncertainty
- Fluent in written and spoken English
We value:
- Experience in hardware-adjacent, lab, or cyber-physical systems
- Background in scientific, research, or experimental environments
- Strong Python skills for automation and tooling
- Experience with long-running, stateful workloads
- Familiarity with firmware, control systems, or real-time constraints
- Experience with programmatic device control (e.g. SCPI, serial, USB, TCP/IP)
- Prior exposure to quantum computing or other deep-tech domains
