Johnson & Johnson RAD (Robotics and Digital) is seeking a highly accomplished Staff Data Engineer, Digital Manufacturing to drive advanced data strategies and initiatives across Manufacturing and Supply Chain operations. As a Staff Data Engineer, you will setup and deliver the data foundations that connect shop-floor systems to Cloud solution with Data storage. You are part of the Digital Manufacturing capability - enabling real-time insights, advanced analytics, and smart, compliant operations. You'll partner across Manufacturing engineering, Operations, Quality, J&J Technology and R&D to architect secure, validated data pipelines and models that scale., * Own data architecture and integration strategy for asset and configuration data across discovery systems, provisioning tools, cloud platforms, monitoring systems, and internal services.
- Design, implement, and operate ETL/ELT pipelines using Databricks (Spark, Delta Lake, Workflows), Python/PySpark, and AWS S3 to ingest, normalize, validate, reconcile, and serve manufacturing data (robot logs, telemetry) into analytics-ready datasets with defined SLAs for freshness, throughput, and availability.
- Build scalable, reliable batch and streaming data pipelines from OT sources (e.g., OPC UA, MQTT, MES) into cloud platforms with Python, SQL, Spark/Databricks, and AWS S3. include schema/contract management, partitioning/retention, and delivery-semantics design to meet throughput and latency targets.
- Create highly reliable APIs and data services for engineers, IT, and business systems to query and manage data at scale.
- Establish data quality, test automation, observability and alerting (data checks, pipeline metrics, dashboards, lineage) to ensure production reliability and audit readiness.
- Ensure compliance with J&J Technology standards, computer systems validation, and audits; author validation documentation.
- Support data governance including standards, lineage, quality checks, and role-based access for data integrity by design.
- Drive change management through documentation, playbooks, training, and adoption tied to business KPIs.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or related technical field.
- 7+ years of data engineering experience (5+ acceptable for exceptional candidates) with hands-on experience in cloud data platforms.
Required:
- Databricks (Spark, Delta Lake, Databricks Workflows) and experience optimizing PySpark jobs.
- AWS S3 and core AWS data services (experience with Kinesis/MSK optional but not required).
- Python, PySpark, SQL and experience designing performant ETL/ELT.
- Proven skills with data governance, data quality frameworks, data lineage, and validation/compliance (e.g., GxP, CSV), and agile methodologies.
- Strong written and verbal communication for documentation, training, and stakeholder engagement.
- Experience integrating OT data sources (OPC UA, MQTT, MES)
Preferred:
- Knowledge of MedTech Compliance and data practices, lakehouse patterns, real-time streaming, and ML integration for manufacturing analytics.
- Certifications in Databricks, AWS, or related (e.g., Data Engineer Professional).
- Familiar with ISA-95 architecture and the use of Unified Naming Space
- Experience in manufacturing/supply chain domains, with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally and drive adoption.
