Job description
Blockwise Engineering designs and builds factory equipment for medical device manufacturers. Our equipment is used to make and test products that improve people's lives.
We are a small, engineering-focused company located in Tempe, Arizona. Our work environment is clean, organized, practical, and highly collaborative. Software, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and testing all happen in the same building, so there is a strong feedback loop between the people designing the machines and the people building them.
Blockwise is looking for a senior software engineer to help design, build, and lead development of the front-end software for our Linux-based machine HMIs.
Our machines perform highly technical mechanical processes such as forming, crimping, welding, wrapping, testing, and other precision manufacturing operations. The HMI is the operator's main window into the machine, so we are looking for someone who can design software that is clear, intuitive, visually polished, and deeply connected to how the machine actually works.
This role combines software engineering, UI/UX design, mechanical/process understanding, and technical leadership. The right person will be able to think like an app designer, a machine operator, an engineer, and a leader.
We are looking for someone who can contribute directly to the codebase while also helping organize the software development process, improve planning, and lead the team toward more reliable execution.
What You'll Do
You will design and implement front-end HMI software for our equipment using Qt/QML on Linux-based systems. You will also help lead the software team by improving how projects are planned, tracked, built, reviewed, and delivered.
Responsibilities include:
- Designing intuitive, visually clean HMI screens for factory equipment
- Writing front-end application code in Qt/QML
- Creating user flows that make complex machine processes easy to understand and operate
- Designing screens for machine setup, calibration, manual controls, recipes, run sequences, alarms, maintenance, and troubleshooting
- Working closely with mechanical, electrical, and controls engineers to understand how each machine works
- Translating machine behavior into clear visual feedback for the operator
- Improving the look, feel, consistency, and usability of our existing HMI platform
- Thinking through edge cases, operator mistakes, recovery paths, warnings, and error handling
- Helping create HMIs that make machines feel understandable, professional, and reliable
- Leading software planning and execution for active machine projects
- Helping implement project controls, software development processes, and management systems
- Breaking large software efforts into clear tasks, priorities, milestones, and deliverables
- Helping estimate work, identify risks, and keep projects moving
- Supporting code reviews, architecture decisions, documentation, and team standards
- Mentoring other software developers and helping the team work more effectively
Requirements
Do you have experience in Embedded software?, We are looking for someone who is strong in front-end software development, has a good eye for usability and design, and has experience leading software projects or software teams.
A strong candidate will have:
- Experience writing front-end applications in Qt/QML
- Strong UI/UX instincts, including layout, flow, visual hierarchy, and usability
- Experience developing software for Linux-based systems
- Experience leading software projects, software teams, or technical development efforts
- Ability to bring structure to a busy software environment
- Experience with project controls, task tracking, development planning, release planning, or software management processes
- Ability to balance hands-on coding with team leadership
- Ability to design interfaces for real-world equipment, tools, instruments, or technical applications
- Mechanical aptitude and the ability to understand how machines work
- Comfort learning about motion systems, sensors, actuators, recipes, calibration, machine states, and operator workflows
- Ability to organize complex technical processes into clear, usable software screens
- Strong attention to detail
- A practical, user-centered design mindset
- Good communication skills and the ability to work directly with engineers, technicians, and company leadership
Helpful Experience
These are not all required, but they would be valuable:
- Qt 6 / QML / Qt Quick Controls
- C++ experience
- Embedded Linux experience
- Industrial automation, machine control, robotics, lab equipment, manufacturing equipment, or test equipment
- Experience designing HMIs, operator interfaces, dashboards, or technical control software
- Motion control, pneumatics, sensors, valves, temperature control, pressure control, or machine sequencing
- Experience with design systems, component libraries, reusable UI patterns, or visual standards
- Familiarity with serial communication, PLCs, microcontrollers, or machine-level communication protocols
- Experience implementing Agile, Scrum, Kanban, ticketing systems, release processes, or engineering project management systems
- Experience improving software quality, team communication, documentation, testing, or deployment processes, You do not need to be a mechanical engineer, but you should be mechanically curious and capable of understanding machine function at a practical level.
