Job description

The Infrastructure Monitoring & Automation Engineer is responsible for the administration, engineering, and continuous improvement of enterprise infrastructure monitoring capabilities. This role ensures centralized visibility across server, virtualization, storage, and hybrid cloud environments through the deployment and management of monitoring platforms, custom automation, scripting, and data-driven reporting.

The position operates within an established SolarWinds environment and requires the ability to administer, maintain, and extend that platform. Equally important is the ability to develop scripts and automation that enhance monitoring workflows, reduce manual effort, and improve operational response. Candidates with strong scripting and SQL skills who can grow into the platform administration responsibilities are encouraged to apply.

This role partners closely with infrastructure engineering, virtualization, storage, and cloud operations teams to maintain monitoring standards, develop dashboards and alerting frameworks, and ensure accurate representation of infrastructure health across the enterprise., The position is responsible for administering and maintaining the SolarWinds Orion monitoring platform, including modules such as Server & Application Monitor (SAM), Virtualization Manager (VMAN), and Log Analyzer. Responsibilities include managing platform patching, upgrades, hotfix installation, and configuration management to ensure the monitoring environment remains secure, stable, and operating on supported software versions.

A core responsibility of this role is developing and maintaining scripts that automate monitoring tasks, data collection, and operational workflows. The position uses SQL to query monitoring databases, generate custom reports, and extract performance and capacity data in support of infrastructure decision-making. Scripting languages such as PowerShell and Python are used to extend platform capabilities, automate alert responses, and integrate monitoring data across systems.

The role designs and maintains monitoring standards, alert thresholds, and operational dashboards that provide real-time visibility into infrastructure health. The position develops reporting capabilities that support proactive detection of infrastructure issues and inform operational decision-making across teams.

The position provides monitoring and performance visibility across Windows server environments, VMware vSphere and Hyper-V virtualized infrastructure, enterprise storage platforms, and hybrid cloud environments including Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services. Monitoring responsibilities include server performance, virtual machine health, datastore utilization, cluster resource availability, and cloud-hosted workload health.

The role integrates monitoring alerts with enterprise IT Service Management platforms such as BMC Remedy or ServiceNow to support automated incident creation, escalation workflows, and operational response. The position assists operations teams with investigating infrastructure alerts related to CPU utilization, memory, disk performance, storage thresholds, service failures, and virtual machine degradation.
