OIT presents a rare opportunity to join the Datacenter Server Patching and Management Team for a dedicated individual to help maintain and enhance Alaska's enterprise server management systems. This position is flexibly staffed-whether you're starting fresh or bringing existing expertise, we have a structured training and development plan to help you advance to a journeyman-level role.

What does your day look like?

  • Verifying servers performed expected tasks during the maintenance windows.
  • Checking enterprise systems to proactively catch issues before they propagate, primarily related to patching server operating systems and the underlying hardware.
  • Investigating operational or security issues.
  • Creating scripts and automation to fine-tune processes implemented through the enterprise server management systems.
  • Providing insight and guidance for the team to focus on problem areas.

IT is an ever-changing landscape and as you develop your skills, you'll have the chance to expand your responsibilities and work on larger, more complex issues, including troubleshooting server operations, monitoring server and storage hardware for potential issues, implementing and managing Hyper-V virtualization, creating operational reports for ongoing processes, and occasionally removing or installing physical equipment from customer locations.

Requirements

Do you have experience in WAN?, We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

  • Hardware Engineering: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools for designing, developing, and testing computer or computer-related equipment.
  • Information Resources Strategy and Planning: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of information technology (IT) assessment, planning, management, monitoring, and evaluation, such as IT baseline assessment, interagency functional analysis, contingency planning, and disaster recovery.
  • Written Communication: Writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience., Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in:
  • Hardware: Knowledge of specifications, uses, and types of computer or computer-related equipment.
  • Infrastructure Design: Knowledge of the architecture and typology of software, hardware, and networks, including LANS, WANS, and telecommunications systems, their components and associated protocols and standards, and how they operate and integrate with one another and with associated controlling software.
  • Operating Systems: Knowledge of computer network, desktop, and mainframe operating systems and their applications.
  • Systems Integration: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures for installing, integrating, and optimizing information systems components.

Equivalent to those typically gained by: Training in computer science, information technology, or system administration - or a similar field or professional experience - that provided knowledge of systems, networking software, hardware, protocols, and scripting/automation tools. IT System Administrator 2 Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in:

  • Hardware: Knowledge of specifications, uses, and types of computer or computer-related equipment.
  • Infrastructure Design: Knowledge of the architecture and typology of software, hardware, and networks, including LANS, WANS, and telecommunications systems, their components and associated protocols and standards, and how they operate and integrate with one another and with associated controlling software.
  • Operating Systems: Knowledge of computer network, desktop, and mainframe operating systems and their applications.
  • Systems Integration: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures for installing, integrating, and optimizing information systems components.
  • Systems Testing and Evaluation: Knowledge of principles, methods, and tools for analyzing and developing systems testing and evaluation procedures and technical characteristics of IT systems, including identifying critical operational issues.

Equivalent to those typically gained by: Training in computer science, information technology, system administration, or a similar field and professional experience in database, network, or system administration. Special Note: "Competencies" means a combination of interrelated knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that enable a person to act effectively in a job or situation. "Typically gained by" means the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job. "Training" means the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction. It includes instruction through formal and informal methods (such as classroom, on-line, self-study, and on-the-job), from accredited and unaccredited sources, and long-duration (such as a post-secondary degree) and short-duration (such as a seminar) programs. "Professional experience" means work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the power or right to decide or act according to one's own judgment. "Progressively responsible" means indicating growth and/or advancement in complexity, difficulty, or level of responsibility., If post-secondary education is required to meet the minimum qualifications, you must fill in the Education section of the application. Copies of transcripts are required to verify educational credentials if used to meet the minimum qualifications for a position.
