Job description

The Traveling Energy Marshal is responsible for overseeing and enforcing electrical safety protocols, energy isolation procedures, and energized work practices on mission-critical data center construction projects nationwide. Working as part of the General Contractor's project team, the Energy Marshal ensures compliance with client requirements, site-specific energy control programs, and industry best practices during construction, startup, commissioning, and turnover activities.

This role serves as the primary authority for energy management, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) coordination, electrical hazard mitigation, and energization planning. The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience supporting hyperscale, colocation, or enterprise data center construction projects and demonstrates a strong understanding of electrical systems, commissioning processes, and safety leadership., Energy Control & Electrical Safety

  • Implement and enforce project-specific Energy Isolation and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) programs.
  • Manage and maintain site energy control procedures for temporary and permanent power systems.
  • Review and approve energy isolation requests and switching plans.
  • Conduct field audits to verify compliance with electrical safety requirements.
  • Ensure all personnel working around energized systems understand applicable hazards and controls.
  • Maintain ownership of site energy control documentation and records.

Energization Planning & Coordination

  • Develop and coordinate energization schedules with project teams, trade partners, commissioning agents, and owners.
  • Participate in energization planning meetings and readiness reviews.
  • Verify completion of prerequisite activities before system energization.
  • Coordinate safe energization of medium-voltage and low-voltage electrical infrastructure.
  • Monitor startup and commissioning activities involving critical electrical systems.

Mission-Critical Systems Oversight:

  • Support construction and commissioning activities for:
  • Utility service entrances
  • Medium-voltage distribution systems
  • Switchgear and switchboards
  • Transformers
  • Generators and paralleling systems
  • UPS systems and battery energy storage systems
  • PDUs, RPPs, and branch distribution systems
  • EPMS and monitoring systems
  • Ensure safe transitions from construction power to permanent power systems.

Safety Leadership:

  • Promote a proactive safety culture focused on hazard recognition and risk mitigation.
  • Conduct electrical safety training and awareness sessions for project personnel.
  • Lead incident investigations involving energy-related events or near misses.
  • Participate in job hazard analyses (JHAs), pre-task planning meetings, and safety audits.
  • Stop work when unsafe conditions or procedures are identified.

Commissioning Support:

  • Partner with commissioning teams to ensure safe execution of startup and testing activities.
  • Verify LOTO boundaries and energy isolation requirements during functional testing.
  • Participate in integrated systems testing (IST) and turnover activities.
  • Support commissioning documentation and energization records.

Documentation & Compliance:

  • Maintain accurate logs of energy isolation activities, permits, and switching operations.
  • Review commissioning procedures, method statements, and energized work permits.
  • Ensure compliance with client-specific energy programs, OSHA regulations, NFPA 70E requirements, and company safety policies.
  • Generate regular reports regarding energization status, risks, and safety performance.

Requirements

Do you have experience in Utility electrical systems?, * 5+ years of electrical safety, commissioning, operations, or construction experience in mission-critical environments.

  • Experience supporting General Contractor-led data center construction projects.
  • Strong understanding of electrical distribution systems and power generation infrastructure.
  • Working knowledge of Lockout/Tagout procedures and energy isolation programs.
  • Familiarity with commissioning and startup activities for mission-critical facilities.
  • Ability to interpret electrical one-line diagrams, switching procedures, and construction drawings.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively (up to 100%) to project sites nationwide.

Preferred:

  • OSHA 30 Certification.
  • NFPA 70E Training or Certification.
  • Electrical Journeyman, Master Electrician, Engineering, or equivalent technical background.
  • Experience with hyperscale data center clients and mission-critical commissioning programs.
  • Experience with medium-voltage switching operations and utility coordination.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
