Job description
This position is a member of a small team of Programmers and Business Analysts who develop and support database applications. These applications include administrative and management information systems and public web-based applications. The group supports a set of functions that are critical to the clients, including research administration, financial management, appointments, admissions, space management, and various departmental initiatives.
Each team member has a set of responsibilities that includes individual responsibility for support of particular clients, project team responsibilities as part of shared development/maintenance projects, infrastructure responsibilities such as data administration, investigation of new technologies, setting standards, conducting reviews, and support of Organization-wide initiatives.
A wide range of technologies is employed in support of the clients, including
- Decision Support (IDS, Meta5, BrioQuery and Business Objects)
- Relational Database (Sybase, SQL Server and Oracle)
- Client/server GUI development (PowerBuilder)
- Mainframe (MVS, JCL, COBOL)
- PC/Macintosh databases (SQL Server 2000, Filemaker, Access)
- Web technologies (HTML, CGI, FTP, ASP, JSP, JavaScript).
Team members are required to exhibit effective communication skills, both in client interaction and technical writing.
Responsibilities
Development Project Team
Large (multi-person) application development projects are run as teams with the programmer/analysts contributing to all aspects of the system development process
- Work as project leader on specific projects. This includes responsibility for project plans and schedules, task assignment, tracking progress, communication with clients, etc.
- Perform analysis, design, construction, testing, installation and roll-out.
- Employ industry-standard tools and techniques in analysis and design, including business, object, data and process modeling.
- Work within agreed-upon project goals, milestones and deadlines.
- Work in a team-oriented environment.
- Coordinate with users and technical staff throughout the Organization for purpose of understanding Organization or other systems which are relevant to the administrative functions.
- Ensure that the administrative systems follow Organization and Department production standards and practices.
- Develop an understanding of the Organizations web infrastructure as it applies to web application development (WebAUTH, ID's, Proxy Servers, SSL, portal technology etc.)
Infrastructure Support
The application information systems infrastructure is a complex and changing set of technologies that support the administrative and decision support applications for the Organization. Included are object and data models, relational database servers, client/server application development environments, microcomputer databases, and mainframe computing environments. The team will share in this responsibility.
- Assume responsibility for assigned pieces of the technology infrastructure, including keeping abreast of the technology, tracking Organization experiences with the technology, setting local standards and guidelines, and supporting backup functions.
- Share in the support of the technical infrastructure including data administration, database administration, systems administration, and operations administration.
Client Application Support
This position will support information systems application needs in one or more areas of the Department. Responsibilities include
- Respond to client problem reports as needed in a timely manner with quality results.
- Communicate and/or refer client problems and results to other team members as appropriate.
- In conjunction with clients, develop plans for application architecture, development, maintenance and support.
- Advise clients on technology issues related to application development and support, including acquisition of hardware and software and the use of consultants.
- Develop, document and maintain administrative information systems.
- As needed, be familiar with a variety of central and other systems which are relevant to the Deparments application systems.
Other
- Comply with governmental regulations and Organizational policies regarding health and safety practices.
Requirements
The successful candidate will have strong developer skills, good oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, ability to handle multiple priorities, and the ability to troubleshoot a wide variety of problems. Bachelor's degree in computer science, MIS, business administration or related field and/or 3-5 years experience in an Information Technology field and direct application development/integration and support of marketplace product experience. Demonstrated expertise in a wide array of technical environments, including Windows NT operating system, relational database (Sybase, Oracle), Decision Support (IDS, Business Objects, BrioQuery), PC/Macintosh databases (SQL Server 7, Filemaker or Access). Knowledge of and experience with admnistrative systems and networking infrastructure desirable.
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to effectively work in teams, participate as a team member, listen, and communicate with clients, team members and vendors. Good written and verbal communication skills. Analytical ability, including the ability to think systematically and to clearly articulate and effectively advocate sound solutions to complex problems. Ability to work in an environment with rapidly changing priorities. Ability to work effectively with a minimum amount of direction.
