Job description
Reporting to the Digital Analytics and Modeling pillar lead at the Virginia Digital Maritime Center, this position builds and maintains the data integration and visualization components that support research and applied projects across VDMC and VMASC. The developer designs extract, transform, load (ETL) pipelines, data models, and interactive dashboards that turn heterogeneous source data into usable analytics and key performance indicator (KPI) visualizations for project stakeholders. The role supports work across multiple projects rather than a single one, with workload coordinated among principal investigators across the two centers. Job Responsibilities: Design, build, and maintain dashboards and KPI visualizations for project stakeholders. Develop and maintain ETL pipelines integrating data from databases, APIs, files, and enterprise systems. Design and refine the data models underlying project analytics platforms. Write Python code for API connections, transformations, and automation. Perform data validation, cleaning, and reconciliation across sources. Document data sources, pipelines, models, and dashboards; produce technical and user documentation. Work with project leads and stakeholders to elicit requirements and support demos and reviews.
Requirements
Bachelor's in computer science or a related field. Experience building data pipelines and dashboards, including academic, internship, or project work. SQL; Python for data manipulation; familiarity with a modern BI/dashboarding platform (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Looker); basic ETL concepts; relational data structures. Ability to handle confidential or sensitive data appropriately., Experience with Power BI (DAX, Power Query); REST API integration; ingestion from enterprise systems and varied file formats; R; cloud data familiarity. Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300) or comparable BI certification. Coursework, training, or exposure to modeling and simulation concepts or data. Prior contribution to an academic or sponsored research project. US person status (US citizen or permanent resident) preferred; US citizenship and eligibility for a US security clearance preferred for assignment to certain projects.
