The Senior Building Automation Systems (BAS) Engineer is a high-level, leadership position responsible for the complete lifecycle of complex BAS projects, from initial design and advanced programming to strategic project and vendor management. This role requires a minimum of 10 years of specialized experience. The Senior Engineer drives technical innovation, ensures compliance with high-level specifications and industry standards, and acts as the primary technical and managerial point of contact for high-profile projects, mentoring junior staff and managing key customer relationships., Advanced System Design and Architecture:
- Lead the comprehensive design and architecture of highly complex, integrated Building Automation Systems for large-scale new construction and deep retrofit projects.
- Develop sophisticated sequences of operation and control strategies to optimize energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and system performance.
- Generate, review, and approve complete submittal packages, including network topologies, detailed control wiring diagrams, DDC panel layouts, and BAS equipment specifications.
- Serve as the final authority for technical standards and system selection.
- Oversee the drafting and finalization of accurate as-built documentation and contribute to long-term BAS upgrade roadmaps.
Control Programming and Commissioning:
- Design, develop, and implement complex DDC programs for global and critical systems, ensuring seamless integration across diverse building services (HVAC, Lighting, Security).
- Lead the advanced system configuration and network integration of various protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, LON).
- Direct and execute comprehensive system commissioning, functional testing, and sophisticated troubleshooting to resolve high-level technical and network issues.
Project, Vendor, and Customer Management:
- Act as the technical lead and subject matter expert for multiple projects, providing direction and mentorship to project managers, engineers, and field technicians.
- Manage relationships and technical specifications with external vendors and technology partners to ensure timely and compliant delivery of equipment and services.
- Serve as the primary technical liaison with clients, consulting engineers, and contractors, leading high-level job meetings and resolving complex technical conflicts.
- Draft, submit, and manage responses to complex Requests for Information (RFIs) and change orders.
- Monitor project progress, budget, and scope, ensuring projects are completed on schedule and within financial targets.
Requirements
- 10+ years of progressive experience in Building Automation, HVAC Controls, or DDC Systems, including significant experience in programming, system architecture, and project management.
- Demonstrated mastery in DDC programming fundamentals and advanced control strategies.
- Expert ability to read, interpret, and modify complex blueprints, specifications, control wiring diagrams, and networking schematics.
- Proven experience in vendor management and technical oversight of sub-contractors and field staff.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and advanced problem-solving skills to resolve large-scale system integration challenges.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Valid driver's license., * Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Automation, or a related field.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license or other advanced certifications.
- Advanced Niagara Framework (N4) Certification or equivalent manufacturer-specific master-level certification (e.g., Distech, Siemens, Trane).
- Expertise in industry-standard communication protocols, including advanced troubleshooting of BACnet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, and network routing.
- Expert-level proficiency with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit) for developing and reviewing design documents.
- Certification such as OSHA 30.
