Requirements

  • A contract requirement for a MS-DOS 4.0 (not PC DOS 4.0) developer, * Strong knowledge of MS-DOS 4.0 internals (not PC-DOS): kernel structure, multitasking features, memory management changes introduced in MS-DOS 4.0.
  • Proficiency in x86 Assembly (8086/80286).
  • Strong C programming skills targeting real-mode DOS environments.
  • Experience with DOS interrupts (especially INT 21h, INT 10h, INT 13h, INT 16h, etc.).
  • Knowledge of FAT16 file system internals.
  • Hands-on experience with TSR programming and interrupt hooking.

Tools & Environment

  • Experience using MASM/TASM, Borland/Turbo C, Microsoft C compilers.
  • Familiarity with legacy debugging tools (DEBUG, SYMDEB, CodeView).
  • Ability to work with old build environments, floppy-disk boot images, and vintage hardware/emulators (e.g., DOSBox, PCem, 86Box).

Soft Skills

  • Strong problem-solving skills for reverse-engineering or restoring undocumented legacy code.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal documentation.
  • Excellent communication skills for documenting complex legacy processes.
