As one of our Lead Software Engineers, you will own the day-to-day people leadership for a subset of our development team - keeping your engineers informed, coordinated, and growing - while working shoulder-to-shoulder with peer leads and reporting to the IT Development Manager. This is a player-coach role: you're not just managing the people doing the work - you're actively doing it alongside them., The PESI IT Team supports every aspect of our organization, from desktop support to enterprise software development. We're looking for someone who can think strategically while managing fast-moving, iterative development work with purpose and precision.
The Lead Software Engineer is one of several peer-level people leaders within the development organization, each responsible for a subset of the development team. These leads report directly to the IT Development Manager and work collaboratively with one another to keep the broader team aligned, unblocked, and moving in the same direction.
Leads in this role also work in close partnership with the VP of IT, both as a resource for their own leadership development and to stay connected to the broader strategic direction of the IT organization. This relationship is an intentional investment in growing strong, strategically-minded leaders.
What You Will Be Doing:
People - Managing, Coaching & Supporting the Dev Team
- Serve as one of the people managers for the development team - handling day-to-day coaching, feedback, and performance conversations
- Coordinate PTO, capacity, and scheduling to ensure the team is appropriately staffed and workloads are balanced
- Foster a positive, respectful, and energized team culture where engineers feel supported and empowered
- Run 1:1s consistently and create a safe space for engineers to raise blockers, ideas, or concerns
- Lead onboarding for new team members, ensuring they ramp quickly and understand SOPs, team norms, tools, and expectations
Build - Hands-On Development & Technical Delivery
- Contribute directly to development work as an active member of the team - writing code, reviewing pull requests, and participating in technical problem-solving.
- Apply a mixture of proven and emerging technologies, including C#, .NET Core, ASP.NET Core, ASP.NET MVC, React, and TypeScript.
- Architect and build new, modern, cloud- and web-based systems that help shape the future of our business - from initial requirements gathering through deployment.
Coordinate - Avoiding Work Collision & Aligning with Product
- Actively manage work assignment and task coordination across the dev team to prevent duplication, collision, or competing priorities
- Partner closely with Product Owners, SMEs, and business experts to understand priority order and ensure the team's work reflects agreed-upon goals
- Facilitate and/or participate in various ceremonies including standups, planning, backlog refinements, and various ad hoc meetings in support of the Development Manager
- Track and communicate progress on development work, surfacing risks or blockers early and keeping stakeholders informed
- Work with project managers and IT leadership to drive software projects from initiation to delivery
Disseminate - Socializing Architecture, Patterns & Key Decisions
- Ensure architecture decisions, design patterns, and technical direction set by IT leadership are clearly understood and applied by the team
- Translate technical complexity into clear guidance that engineers can act on
- Promote best practices, coding standards, and workflows that drive consistency and quality across the codebase
- Keep the team engaged and informed on the technology roadmap and how their work fits into the bigger picture
Cultivate - Subject Matter Expertise, Learning & Team Growth
- Identify and cultivate subject matter expertise within the team, encouraging engineers to develop deep knowledge in key areas
- Field technical questions from team members and connect them with the right resources, peers, or documentation
- Mentor developers at all levels, supporting their career growth and helping them get outside their comfort zone
- Stay in touch with emerging technology trends and share relevant learnings with the team
- Build a culture of continuous learning, curiosity, and collaborative problem-solving
Requirements
Do you have experience in Writing skills?, Leadership & People Skills
- 3-5+ years of experience in a technical leadership, team lead, or engineering management role
- A genuine passion for mentoring engineers and helping them grow
- Experience managing team capacity, PTO coordination, and workload balancing
- A track record of building positive, high-trust team cultures
- Experience facilitating agile ceremonies or coordinating iterative development workflows
Communication & Coordination
- Clear, direct communication skills - written and verbal, technical and non-technical
- Ability to translate between business priorities and engineering work
- Proactive approach to identifying blockers, risks, and misalignments before they become problems
- A collaborative, organized mindset for managing across teams and stakeholders
Flexible, Iterative Mindset
- Comfort working in fast-moving environments with evolving priorities
- A background in adaptive, feedback-driven development even if not in formal Agile frameworks
- A love of continuous improvement and collaborative problem-solving
