Job description

To provide on-going technical support and training on hardware and software resources for end-users; perform related work.

The Nursing Simulation Technician is responsible for supporting and maintaining the functionality of simulation technology in nursing education programs. The technician ensures that simulation labs, equipment, and audiovisual systems are operational, maintained, and utilized effectively to support the nursing faculty. This includes the setup, operation, and troubleshooting of simulation technology during nursing simulation sessions and assisting in creating realistic clinical environments for hands-on learning. Additionally, the technician manages lab inventory, coordinates scheduling, and assists faculty in the planning and delivery of simulation scenarios.

  • Set up, operate, and break down simulation scenarios, including high-fidelity manikins, medical equipment, and audiovisual systems.
  • Prepare environments to simulate healthcare-related experiences, including moulage application for realism.
  • Operate simulation software and systems to ensure that physiological responses occur per faculty specifications.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain simulation equipment and software to ensure consistent operation.
  • Utilize the audiovisual system (e.g., VALT) for clear recordings of simulation scenarios and troubleshoot issues as needed.
  • Program manikins and simulation technology according to scenario learning objectives.
  • Function as the voice of simulators and coach embedded participants on developed roles.

Simulation Support and Coordination:

  • Collaborate with faculty to design, implement, and deliver simulation scenarios.
  • Assist faculty and students in operating simulation technology during hands-on training.
  • Coordinate scheduling of simulation labs and equipment in collaboration with faculty.
  • Support the use of standardized patients and assist in selecting appropriate modalities for simulation scenarios.
  • Assist with debriefing learners and faculty according to best practices.

Maintenance and Inventory:

  • Perform routine maintenance of simulation equipment, manikins, and audiovisual technology.
  • Manage inventory systems, ensuring simulation environments are stocked with necessary medical supplies and equipment.
  • Restock labs after simulation scenarios and coordinate the ordering of supplies.
  • Ensure the proper care and maintenance of all simulation technology and equipment.

Training and Professional Development:

  • Train faculty, staff, and students on the use of simulation equipment and software.
  • Participate in continual learning, including staying up-to-date with advancements in simulation technology.
  • Obtain and maintain certification as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) and pursue additional relevant certifications.

Data Collection and Reporting:

  • Document simulation activities, including equipment usage, technical issues, and maintenance logs.
  • Assist with data collection for program evaluation and student assessment purposes.
  • Collaborate with faculty on curriculum design and simulation scenario planning.

Requirements

Some knowledge of:

  • Computer trends, software, capabilities, and terminology.
  • Computer hardware and software installation, and troubleshooting.

Experience:

  • Identifying and resolving computer and system problems including compatibility conflicts, application operations, and hardware malfunctions.
  • Supporting users in the use of application software.
  • Communicating and coordinating with vendors, users, and other IT staff.
