Job description

In this critical role, you will help manage and maintain the City's networked infrastructure, communications systems, hardware, software, security systems, data backup processes, and disaster recovery procedures. You will also provide essential technical support to City employees, with a strong focus on supporting first responders, dispatch operations, and other mission-critical municipal services., As the Network Administrator, you will:

  • Support, monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot the City's network infrastructure, systems, and communications technology
  • Help ensure the reliable availability of data communications through monitoring tools, dashboards, protocol analyzers, and related systems
  • Implement and monitor security and remote access standards for network devices and data systems
  • Configure and maintain routers, access lists, VLANs, firewalls, intrusion detection services, VPNs, and related network equipment
  • Support disaster recovery standards, risk analysis, data backup systems, fault-tolerant hardware, and recovery strategies
  • Install, configure, and maintain network devices, computers, printers, scanners, digital cameras, multimedia equipment, and related peripherals
  • Maintain the physical and logical health of the network, including file services, cabling, hardware installations, and upgrades
  • Support virtualization management, SAN operations, database administration, Active Directory/Group Policy administration, email administration, and access control standards
  • Develop plans and standardized methods for installing and configuring software on user accounts, individual computers, and network systems
  • Design automated solutions for internal procedures and create custom technology solutions when needed
  • Provide expert technical support to City departments, including needs assessment, strategic planning, procurement coordination, installation, and implementation of new hardware and software
  • Maintain and support technology functions for dispatch and public safety personnel
  • Install, configure, and maintain physical security systems, including surveillance, intrusion, and access control systems
  • Maintain system documentation, inventory, and technical records
  • Provide technical support, training, and troubleshooting assistance to City employees
  • Participate in a 24/7 rotational on-call support roster and after-hours meeting rotations
  • Respond to emergency call-outs after regular office hours when needed
  • Perform all duties in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices
  • Perform related duties as assigned, Because this position supports critical City operations, including public safety and dispatch functions, the Network Administrator will be required to participate in rotational on-call support, attend after-hours meetings, and respond to emergency situations outside of regular business hours.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of networked systems, including copper, fiber-optic, and wireless communication standards
  • Understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing protocols, operating systems, protocols, and security practices
  • Experience configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting network devices, servers, workstations, software, and peripheral equipment
  • Knowledge of virtualization technologies, data integrity practices, backup systems, and NAS technologies
  • Ability to analyze, resolve, and document technical problems in established network environments
  • Ability to diagnose connectivity issues, slow performance, hardware failures, software concerns, and related technology problems
  • Experience using scripting or programming tools such as PowerShell, Python, SQL, or similar technologies
  • Proficiency in administering Windows Server
  • Ability to operate application delivery software, connectivity software, and specialized municipal or public safety applications
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical information clearly to end users
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and sound judgment when working with sensitive systems or information
  • Strong problem-solving ability, including the ability to create effective solutions when no published solution exists
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively with supervisors, coworkers, City departments, and public safety personnel
  • Commitment to integrity, ingenuity, teamwork, reliability, and continuous improvement, * High school diploma or GED equivalent required
  • College degree and/or advanced technical training certificate in computer, networking, communications technology, or a related field preferred
  • Two to three years of network administration experience or experience in a related field preferred
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work
  • Idaho State Limited Energy Electrical license optional
  • Valid driver's license is required for travel between municipal sites
  • Required to obtain and maintain a federal or state-level security clearance depending on access to sensitive systems or law enforcement data
  • May be required to reside within City or County limits or relocate within a specified timeframe after appointment
  • Ability to successfully pass required pre-employment screening

Work Environment

This position primarily works in a general office environment; however, routine travel to various City departments and municipal sites is required for field support. The position may occasionally work outdoors in inclement weather and may be exposed to hazardous conditions, including risk of electrical shock.

The role requires sufficient communication, visual, manual, and mobility abilities to read and understand technical manuals and diagrams, prepare written reports, troubleshoot and repair network and computer equipment, operate tools and equipment, work in confined spaces, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and lift or move up to 50 pounds.
