The Network/Security Administrator is responsible for the advanced engineering, administration, security, and support of Wytheville Community College's data, voice, and video network infrastructure. The position provides expert-level management of wired and wireless networking systems, firewalls, VPN technologies, Microsoft Teams Voice services, and electronic communications platforms to ensure the secure, reliable, and efficient delivery of technology services.
This position is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and enhancing network performance across all campus and remote locations. Duties include installing, configuring, and supporting routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, network security appliances, and cloud-connected services. The incumbent ensures network availability, manages system documentation, and supports disaster recovery and business continuity initiatives.
The Network/Security Administrator plays a critical role in safeguarding institutional information assets through the implementation and enforcement of cybersecurity policies, procedures, and technical controls. Responsibilities include security monitoring, vulnerability assessments, incident response, identity and access management, multi-factor authentication administration, and maintaining compliance with applicable federal, state, and industry regulations, including FERPA, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, NIST, and ISO 27001 frameworks.
This position also provides advanced technical support for endpoint devices, collaborates with faculty and staff to determine technology needs, and assists with the deployment, configuration, and maintenance of computer hardware, software, and network-access resources. The incumbent serves as a subject matter expert for network and security technologies and works collaboratively with Information Technology Services staff, VCCS personnel, and external vendors to support the mission and strategic goals of Wytheville Community College. Requirements
- Demonstrated experience installing, configuring, and supporting enterprise network infrastructure, including routers, switches, wireless systems, firewalls, VPNs, and network security appliances.
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing and switching protocols, internet security principles, and cybersecurity best practices.
- Experience administering Microsoft 365, Azure /Entra ID, and cloud-based services such as Meraki, Juniper.
- Experience utilizing security tools such as firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, vulnerability scanners, endpoint protection platforms, or SIEM solutions.
- Experience supporting compliance initiatives and implementing security controls related to industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage service requests using an IT ticketing system and prioritize multiple projects.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
Additional Considerations
- Experience and education equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in information technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Network Administration, or related field.
- Industry certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Security+, CCNA, CISSP,Juniper or Palo Alto certifications.
- Experience supporting Cisco, Meraki, Palo Alto, Juniper, or similar enterprise platforms.
- Experience with identity and access management, MFA, and Varonis.
