Job description
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Ribbon Fiber Technician to support a critical new data center campus build in Manassas, VA. The primary objective of this role is to establish the high-capacity optical links between multiple newly constructed data center buildings on the campus. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in handling, routing, and mass-fusion splicing extreme high-count ribbon fiber cables (1728 count) through underground duct banks, vaults, and inter-building pathways. This role operates within a fast-paced greenfield construction environment and requires strict adherence to project timelines and safety standards., * Inter-Building Cable Routing: Safely pull and route high-density ribbon fiber optic cables between data center buildings, navigating outdoor plant (OSP) environments, underground conduits, maintenance manholes, and innerducts.
- Mass Fusion Splicing: Perform precision mass fusion splicing of 12-fiber ribbons using specialized ribbon splicing equipment (e.g., Fujikura, Sumitomo). Ensure optimal alignment and minimal insertion loss across extreme high-count fiber trunks.
- Cable Preparation & Ribbonizing: Expertly strip, prep, and manage high-count cables. Perform ribbonizing of loose tube fibers where transition splicing is required to interface with intra-building networks.
- Enclosure Installation: Build out and seal high-capacity fiber splice closures (FSCs) and fiber distribution panels within campus vaults and building meet-me rooms (MMRs), ensuring robust protection against environmental factors.
- Testing & Quality Assurance: Conduct bi-directional OTDR and optical power meter testing on high-count fiber links to verify continuity, identify micro-bends, and ensure the campus backbone meets strict performance thresholds.
- Site Safety & Coordination: Navigate a highly active construction site safely. Coordinate with civil contractors, electrical teams, and project managers to ensure pathway readiness and adherence to OSHA and site-specific safety regulations., Applicants selected may be subject to a background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or employment as a contractor assigned to the U.S. government, as required.
Requirements
- Experience: 1+ years of specialized experience in ribbon fiber splicing and high-count fiber optic cable deployments, particularly in campus, OSP (Outside Plant), or telecommunications environments.
- Technical Expertise: Proven mastery of mass fusion splicers, ribbon preparation tools, and high-capacity splice enclosures. Familiarity with the unique handling requirements and bend-radius limitations of heavy, extreme high-count cables.
- Testing Proficiency: Experience utilizing advanced OTDRs capable of rapid, multi-fiber testing and interpreting complex trace data.
- Certifications: No formal certifications are required; selection will be based on verifiable hands-on experience and technical competence in ribbon fiber deployment.
- Blueprint Comprehension: Ability to read and interpret campus site plans, conduit routing diagrams, and splice matrices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience connecting multiple buildings on hyperscale data center campuses in the Northern Virginia (Ashburn/Manassas) market.
- Experience transitioning OSP ribbon cables to indoor-rated cables within building entrance facilities.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to safely lift, push, pull, and manipulate heavy cable and equipment weighing up to 50-70 lbs.
- Capability to work in varied outdoor environments, including confined spaces (such as telecommunications vaults or manholes), and adapt to changing weather conditions common on construction sites.
- Superior manual dexterity, steady hands, and excellent visual acuity for preparing and splicing multi-fiber ribbons.
