Job description
The Mechanical Solutions Engineer is a new position that combines the responsibilities of a field engineer, estimator, project developer, and technical sales engineer. You will be the technical face of Beacon to our customers: the person who visits the site, diagnoses the problem, develops the right solution, prices it, and delivers a professional proposal - often within the same day. You will own that entire process from first call through award, supported by modern AI-assisted estimating and proposal tools that eliminate the administrative work that slows traditional estimators down. What You Will Do Customer Engagement
- Meet with facility managers and maintenance staff to understand operational issues, budget constraints, urgency, and future needs
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact from initial site visit through project award
- Conduct follow-up calls and site meetings, answer technical questions, revise estimates, negotiate scope, and close work
Site Investigation & Documentation
- Inspect conveyor systems, HVAC equipment, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, controls, plumbing, drainage, and related building systems
- Document deficiencies with photographs, video, measurements, model numbers, sketches, and equipment lists
- Use Beacon's AI-assisted field tools to convert site observations into structured field reports before leaving the site
Solution Development & Estimating
- Develop repair and replacement recommendations, including multiple options and value engineering alternatives where appropriate
- Prepare detailed scopes of work and coordinate subcontractor participation
- Perform material takeoffs, labor calculations, and equipment pricing; obtain vendor quotations; account for rentals, permits, engineering, markup, and contingency
- Conduct risk review on every estimate before submission
Proposal Development & Delivery
- Produce professional proposals that include photos, deficiency explanations, recommended solutions, options, warranty terms, lead times, and schedule
- Deliver estimates within 72 hours of the site visit as a standard, with same-day delivery as the goal for routine repair scopes
- Manage automated follow-up and track proposal outcomes to continually improve win rate and margin
Requirements
- Significant hands-on HVAC and mechanical systems experience (service, installation, or facilities background)
- Construction or mechanical service estimating experience
- Strong written communication - you can explain a technical problem and its solution clearly to a non-technical building owner
- Solid computer skills and genuine willingness to work with AI-assisted estimating and documentation tools
- Customer-facing professionalism and a service mindset
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to customer sites daily
Preferred
- Experience with field service management platforms such as ServiceTitan
- Experience developing budget and firm proposals for commercial mechanical repair and replacement projects
- Trade license (refrigeration, plumbing, or similar) or engineering coursework
