Job description

The University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science seeks an accomplished and forward-thinking leader to serve as its next Director of Information Technology and Analytics. With more than 3,000 undergraduate students, 1,000 graduate students, and a rapidly expanding research enterprise, UVA Engineering advances technologies and solutions that improve lives and strengthen communities. The Director plays a critical role in supporting the school's education and research missions and shaping its technological future.

The Director serves as the school's primary technology advisor, guiding strategy, strengthening cybersecurity practices, advancing data-informed decision-making, and ensuring reliable, secure, and innovative technology services that power the school's education and research missions.

Salary range: 160-190k Commensurate with education and experience

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Lead the school's IT strategy in alignment with the school's mission and strategic priorities.

  • Serve as the principal technology advisor to school leadership, providing guidance on digital strategy, risk, and emerging opportunities.

  • Represent the School in university-wide IT governance and planning forums and IT focused higher education professional organizations.

  • Identify and lead modernization initiatives in partnership with UVA Information Technology Services, Institutional Research and Analytics and technology leaders across UVA to enhance operational efficiency, service quality, data-informed decision-making and user experience.

Technology and Data Strategy and Execution

  • Advance data and analytics capabilities to support reporting, planning, and decision-making.

  • Partner closely with leadership, faculty and staff to support evolving teaching, learning, and research technology needs.

  • Guide the responsible adoption of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.

  • Maintain high standards of service delivery, responsiveness, and customer engagement across the school.

Data Security

  • Lead implementation of cybersecurity and research security best practices in partnership with University Information Technology Services and the Office of the Vice President for Research.

  • Ensure compliance with university policies, state and federal regulations, and data governance standards.

  • Maintain and regularly test business continuity and disaster recovery plans for school-managed IT systems.

  • Promote security awareness and digital responsibility across the school community.

Team, Operations, and Financial Management

  • Operate comfortably at both strategic and tactical levels, providing hands-on leadership when needed.

  • Cultivate a high performing, self-motivated IT and Analytics team.

  • Lead digital transformation and process improvement initiatives.

  • Manage IT budgets and ensure responsible financial stewardship.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field; experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Ten or more years of progressively responsible experience in information technology, systems administration, data management, analytics, cybersecurity, or related technical domains.

  • Three or more years of supervisory or teamlead experience, including responsibility for staff development, performance management, and operational oversight.

  • Demonstrated experience managing IT operations, enterprise systems, or technical services in a complex, distributed environment.

  • Experience developing and implementing IT policies, standards, and procedures.

  • Strong understanding of IT service delivery, system lifecycle management, and technology governance.

  • Experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including faculty, researchers, administrators, and central IT units.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem solving skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for nontechnical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field.

  • Experience working in engineering, science or other higher education research and education focused IT environments.

  • Experience leading IT modernization initiatives, change management, cloud migrations, or enterprise architecture planning.

  • Familiarity with research computing, data governance, cybersecurity frameworks, and compliance requirements relevant to higher education.

  • Experience managing budgets, vendor relationships, and technology procurement. Demonstrated success implementing IT service management (ITSM) practices or frameworks (e.g., ITIL).

  • Experience with data analytics platforms, reporting tools, or data integration technologies.

  • Professional certifications such as ITIL, PMP, CISSP, CISM, AWS/Azure certifications, or similar credentials.
