Job description
SANDT is looking for a Data Engineer Consultant to join us in supporting data transformation and analytics initiatives across complex client environments.
We work on programmes where data, platforms, business processes, and technology intersect. As a Data Engineer Consultant, you will help organisations build reliable, scalable, and well-structured data foundations that enable reporting, analytics, business insights, and future advanced data use cases.
Responsibilities
- Manage defined workstreams independently, including planning, delivery, and quality assurance.
- Interact directly with clients within your scope and contribute to decision-oriented deliverables.
- Coach junior colleagues and actively contribute to team performance and knowledge sharing.
- Build, maintain, and improve data pipelines ingesting data from enterprise applications, business systems, and external sources.
- Contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of data models for reporting, analytics, and broader platform use cases.
- Support the architecture and evolution of data solutions within the broader data platform environment, in close collaboration with architects and technical teams.
- Document and maintain a clear view of the data landscape, including sources, flows, models, dependencies, ownership, and technical constraints.
- Review and improve technical designs and implementations for consistency, quality, scalability, maintainability, and production readiness.
- Help define and continuously improve data engineering, reporting, and analytics standards.
- Provide analytics users with reliable data structures, trusted datasets, tools, and reusable frameworks.
- Collaborate with technical teams, analytics users, and business stakeholders to translate data needs into practical solutions.
- Work across hybrid data architectures and technologies.
- Anticipate risks, dependencies, and data-quality issues, and propose pragmatic solutions early.
- Simplify complex data topics for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Requirements
Soft Skills
- Trilingual proficiency: Dutch, French, and English.
- Excellent communication and active listening skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset.
- Ability to simplify complex technical topics and create clarity for different audiences.
- Pragmatic, structured, and delivery-oriented mindset.
- Comfortable navigating ambiguity, dependencies, and changing priorities.
- Collaborative by nature, with the ability to build trust across technical and business teams.
- Strong sense of ownership, with the ability to anticipate risks, challenge constructively, and drive improvements.
Professional Experience
- Master's degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
- Extensive hands-on experience in data engineering, with enough delivery exposure to know what good looks like and explain it through concrete examples.
- Proven experience designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines for analytical, reporting, and business use cases.
- Experience contributing to data platforms or data architecture initiatives in complex environments.
- Experience working with multiple stakeholder groups, including business teams, architects, analytics teams, report developers, and data scientists.
- Experience working in agile delivery environments, with a strong focus on quality, collaboration, and tangible outcomes.
Technical Requirements
- Strong SQL skills.
- Fluency in one or more data-oriented languages or frameworks, such as Python, Scala, Spark, PySpark, or similar.
- Solid data modelling skills, including UML, ER modelling, analytical schemas, and data structures for reporting and analytics.
- Meaningful experience with Databricks and Unity Catalog as part of an analytical data platform.
- Comfortable working within a Microsoft Azure-based data ecosystem.
- Experience with data pipeline design, orchestration, transformation, testing, monitoring, and production support.
- Ability to work across cloud-based and on-premise data architectures and understand how pipelines, models, platforms, and tools connect.
- Strong understanding of data quality, lineage, metadata, access management, scalability, and maintainability principles.
- Familiarity with BI and visualisation tools such as Power BI, Grafana, or Tableau is a plus.
- Experience with different data formats, including structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data, is a plus.
- Exposure to machine learning, advanced analytics, or data science enablement is a plus.
- Curiosity and openness towards new technologies, patterns, and ways of working are a strong asset.
