Job description

As our Principal Software Engineer, you will take a senior leadership role within the Digital Services Directorate, responsible for architecting, developing, integrating, and supporting the digital systems critical to our EPR rollout and wider organisational strategy.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and mentor a team of highly skilled developers and integration specialists.
  • Oversee development of high-quality, resilient, secure software and data integrations supporting clinical safety and operational efficiency.
  • Act as technical authority across backend systems, interfaces, data architecture and code quality, providing expert leadership to development teams.
  • Work with clinical and non-clinical colleagues to ensure EPR data is accurate, validated, trusted and available for real-time and strategic clinical needs.
  • Champion Agile methodologies, serving as Scrum Master and driving continuous improvement.
  • Drive interface development using HL7, FHIR, RESTful APIs, SOAP, and modern standards across multiple Trust systems.
  • Advise senior management, digital leaders and clinical stakeholders on technical strategy, data usage, integration approaches and system enhancements., This is a senior, highly influential role where you will shape the Group's approach to clinical system integration, resilience, and integration standards. Your work will be used by thousands of clinical and operational users and will directly support safer, faster and more informed patient care.

Requirements

  • Extensive software development experience, including:
  • Intersystems Cach ObjectScript, SQL (SSIS/SSRS), REST APIs, REACTJS, JavaScript, HTML, CSS.
  • Strong knowledge of interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR) and experience integrating complex clinical systems.
  • Extensive experience with Integration Engines.
  • Senior management experience within the NHS or similarly complex environments.
  • Expertise in database design, server/platform configuration, DevOps/CI tooling, cybersecurity considerations, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Significant experience leading multi-skilled development teams using Agile Scrum.
  • Proven ability to design, test, deploy, and maintain technically resilient software in safety-critical settings.

Desirable experience:

  • Experience working directly with NHS clinical systems or previous EPR experience
  • Knowledge of clinical workflows and NHS operational structures.
  • DevOps certificationsor advanced testing/system planning experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Server, enterprise storage, virtualisation and DevOps technologies
  • Certified Scrum Professional or other Agile/Scrum certifications, * Masters level qualification or equivalent experience/knowledge, * Education or qualifications relative to clinical or operational management within an acute healthcare environment
  • Certified enhanced DevOps qualifications
  • Certified Scrum Professional or other Scrum alliance qualifications
  • Managing Intersystems servers/Developing with Intersystems Objects and SQL, * Experience producing long term technically resilient software plans to support digital service objectives and product lifecycle, including: planning, development, testing, integration, deployment
  • Specialist knowledge and advanced understanding of a variety of development techniques and methodologies, specifically integration development and with extensive experience in the application in a commercial or healthcare environment
  • Demonstrated at least significant experience managing a team of multi skilled developers with a strong understanding of the practical application of the Agile software development cycle and its principles
  • Experience with Internet security technologies and enterprise level storage systems
  • Experience of Continuous Delivery (CD) methodologies inside product development teams
