Job description

  • Build, operate, and maintain enterprise virtualisation platforms such as VMware vSphere/ESXi and Hyper-V
  • Provide day-to-day operational support, including monitoring, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and capacity optimisation
  • Execute patching, upgrades, firmware updates, and hardware lifecycle activities
  • Ensure high availability, clustering, failover, and recovery mechanisms are in place
  • Own platform lifecycle processes, including build standards, upgrades, decommissioning, and technical refreshes
  • Conduct capacity planning and forecasting to meet business demand
  • Identify and remediate single points of failure and support disaster recovery testing
  • Develop and maintain automation for provisioning and configuration using scripting and Infrastructure as Code
  • Standardise virtualisation builds, templates, and configurations
  • Support integration with cloud and container platforms in hybrid delivery models
  • Act as an escalation point for complex incidents
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement preventive actions
  • Support controlled change execution following ITIL processes
  • Ensure platforms meet security standards, hardening guidelines, and regulatory requirements
  • Support audits with documentation and operational evidence
  • Manage vulnerabilities, configuration drift, and access controls
  • Work closely with storage, network, OS, cloud, and application teams
  • Provide technical input for designs and onboarding
  • Maintain documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures

  • DevOps, We are Gigged.AI, an on-demand talent platform specialising in the IT and technology sector, and we are working with one of our enterprise clients on this contract opportunity for an Infrastructure Engineer (Virtualisation). This is a leading financial services organisation where we are seeking someone to design, build, and support enterprise virtualisation platforms across on-premises and hybrid environments, ensuring stability, performance, security, and regulatory compliance. The role starts ASAP on a 6-month rolling contract, likely to run for 1-2 years, at £550 per day inside IR35. The position is hybrid, with two days per week in our Sheffield office to start, with the potential to reduce once established. All proposals are reviewed through the Gigged AI platform.

Requirements

  • Experience with enterprise virtualisation (VMware vSphere/ESXi/vCenter or equivalent)
  • Proven infrastructure engineering or platform operations experience in enterprise environments
  • Hands-on experience with upgrades, patching, performance tuning, and troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of server hardware, storage, and networking related to virtualisation
  • ITIL-aligned operational experience
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills
  • Experience in financial services or other regulated industries is desirable
  • Scripting and automation experience (PowerShell, Python) and Infrastructure as Code is desirable
  • Knowledge of hybrid integration between virtualisation, cloud, and containers is desirable
  • Disaster recovery and business continuity experience is desirable
  • Ownership and accountability for platform stability
  • Ability to work in global, multi-disciplinary teams
  • Clear communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Proactive mindset focused on continuous improvement and risk reduction
