Software Engineer

This role sits within giffgaff's broadband engineering space, with a strong focus on backend development, building the services and platforms that power a seamless, reliable connectivity experience for members. You'll be responsible for designing, developing and maintaining scalable, fault-tolerant systems that support everything from hardware interactions to customer-facing services, ensuring performance and reliability are at the heart of what you deliver.

Working as part of a cross-functional product engineering team, you'll collaborate closely with hardware specialists, customer teams and fellow engineers to continuously evolve and improve the platform. While the role is primarily backend-focused, there is the opportunity to contribute to frontend development when needed, using modern technologies to deliver end-to-end solutions. You'll work with a contemporary tech stack including Java, Spring Boot and AWS on the backend, alongside React and TypeScript on the frontend, all within a culture that champions pair programming, test-driven development and continuous delivery.

In order to be considered, you must have the following experience;

• Strong experience with Java and Spring Boot for backend development
• Proven experience in test-driven development, pair programming and clean coding practices
• Solid understanding of system design and building scalable, resilient services
• Experience with observability and a "you build it, you run it" mindset
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams

• Experience with event-driven architecture, microservices or distributed systems
• Exposure to frontend development using React or TypeScript
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure such as AWS, Kubernetes or Terraform
• Experience within broadband, telecoms or connectivity environments
• Interest in emerging technologies such as generative AI and modern engineering practices
