Job description

If selected you'll serve as a GIS Specialist providing a range of geospatial support as a member of the VS CEAH Geospatial Analytics, Products, and Services (GAPS) Unit. The position involves participating on a multi-disciplinary team to support animal health, animal disease outbreaks and mitigation, epidemiology investigations, risk identification & analyses, geospatial analyses and modeling, and cartographic/map production., * The duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Participates in a multi-disciplinary team and is highly skilled in using GIS to support animal health, animal disease outbreaks, epidemiology investigations, geospatial risk analyses, geospatial modeling, and cartographic or map production.

  • Configures, enhances, and maintains web maps and map applications to meet program requests.

  • Creates and publishes GIS solutions for the collection and presentation of relevant data in support of the agency's various missions.

  • Uses spatial analysis techniques and tools to collect and analyze data in a geospatial context to ascertain and interpret interrelationships existing among various occurrences or processes to determine its significance or risk to the agency.

  • Makes appropriate recommendations on how best to visually display data, which may originate from existing diverse sources or may be derived through surveillance activities.

  • Works with thematic data creating data layers to support program operations and management decisions, emergency planning & response, and GIS analytics., * Direct Deposit: Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution.

  • Developing complex cartographic products in different formats and in different environments (web and desktop) for a variety of needs, including emergency response, epidemiology outbreak investigations, and surveillance.

  • Updating and running geospatial scripts that are used to automate data processes, support web-GIS, and improve efficiencies in map making.

  • Creating and publishing map products and solutions for integration in a variety of geospatial projects., * Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. Any travel, transportation, and relocation expense associated with reporting for duty will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

  • Locality pay will vary based upon the selectee's duty location. A final salary determination will be made upon selection.

  • Field work may be required at times and may entail field locations with hiking in uneven terrain and heavy lifting possible.

  • This position is subject to mandatory physical deployments in support of an emergency response to an animal disease outbreak for several weeks at a time, as required by the Agency.

  • Occasional, infrequent assignments require visits to secured areas, such as import centers, laboratories, etc., where protective gear will be required.
