Job description
We are seeking a Senior SQL Server Database Administrator to administer, secure, optimize, monitor, and support Microsoft SQL Server database environments for a federal health research customer. The role supports development, test, and production databases across on-premises and cloud environments and requires strong expertise in standalone and clustered architectures, backup and recovery, failover clustering, T-SQL, performance tuning, troubleshooting, SQL Server Agent, SSRS, SSIS, SSAS, security, and data integration., · Administer Microsoft SQL Server databases in development, test, staging, disaster-recovery, and production environments.
· Support standalone and clustered SQL Server architectures on Windows in on-premises and cloud environments.
· Install, configure, patch, upgrade, secure, monitor, and troubleshoot SQL Server instances and supporting components.
· Design, configure, maintain, test, and document full, differential, and transaction-log backup and recovery processes.
· Configure, administer, monitor, and troubleshoot SQL Server failover clusters and high-availability capabilities.
· Create, schedule, monitor, and troubleshoot SQL Server Agent jobs, maintenance plans, alerts, and automated operational processes.
· Write, review, optimize, and troubleshoot T-SQL queries, scripts, stored procedures, functions, triggers, views, and deployment packages.
· Perform query tuning, indexing, statistics maintenance, execution-plan analysis, capacity planning, and performance optimization.
· Manage users, roles, permissions, service accounts, authentication, auditing, encryption, and database-security configuration.
· Administer and support SQL Server Reporting Services, SQL Server Integration Services, and SQL Server Analysis Services.
· Support schema changes, application releases, data migrations, data refreshes, synchronization, reporting, and data-integration workflows.
· Develop and maintain database views, data structures, data marts, and integrations supporting Power BI, Qlik, and other analytics platforms.
· Support interoperability and data exchange involving Oracle, MySQL, external federal systems, COTS applications, and data warehouses.
· Monitor database health, availability, storage, performance, security, backups, jobs, and data loads; proactively identify and resolve issues.
· Troubleshoot complex database, connectivity, performance, cluster, backup, recovery, and production incidents.
· Develop and maintain database architecture documentation, standard operating procedures, runbooks, backup/recovery plans, and change records.
· Support federal security, privacy, vulnerability-remediation, configuration-management, and audit requirements.
· Collaborate with application developers, infrastructure engineers, security teams, data teams, and customer stakeholders.
Requirements
· More than five years of Microsoft SQL Server database-administration experience.
· Extensive experience administering SQL Server databases in standalone and clustered architectures on Windows.
· Experience supporting SQL Server databases in both on-premises and cloud environments.
· Extensive experience with SQL Server backup, restore, recovery, failover clustering, job setup, and monitoring.
· Strong Transact-SQL skills.
· Strong database-performance tuning and troubleshooting skills.
· Experience administering or supporting SQL Server Reporting Services, SQL Server Integration Services, and SQL Server Analysis Services.
· Strong security, documentation, incident-response, communication, and customer-support skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
· Experience with SQL Server 2016, 2019, or 2022.
· Experience administering SQL Server on Windows and in Microsoft Azure.
· Experience administering MySQL on Ubuntu.
· Experience supporting federal systems, data marts, reporting platforms, or enterprise data-integration workloads.
Work Requirements:
· Ability to satisfy federal background, suitability, identity-credentialing, and system-access requirements.
· Ability to work remotely within the United States and attend occasional onsite meetings in Bethesda, Maryland.
· Ability to protect sensitive government information and comply with applicable federal security, privacy, records-management, and acceptable-use requirements.
· Availability during regular business hours and, when needed, for scheduled releases, maintenance activities, or urgent production support.
