Job description

  • Lead project teams delivering bespoke algorithms to our clients across the defence and national security sector
  • Conceive the data science approach and design the associated software architecture
  • Ensure best practices are followed throughout delivery
  • Help our commercial team build strong relationships with clients and shape the direction of current and future projects
  • Guide early-stage commercial engagements by defining project scope with an emphasis on technical feasibility
  • Support our ability to deliver high-quality software within allocated timeframes
  • Mentor a small number of data scientists and support the professional growth of project team members
  • Provide targeted support and step-up opportunities where helpful
  • Contribute to our reputation in practical data science through courses, conference talks, roundtables, and open-source projects
  • Teach on our fellowship across topics from basic statistics to reinforcement learning
  • Mentor fellows through their 6-week project
  • Collaborate with software engineers and designers from our product team to inform the development of our AI products

Requirements

  • Senior experience in either a professional data science position or a quantitative academic field
  • Strong programming skills demonstrated through previous work in data science or software engineering, with the ability to become fluent in Python quickly
  • Excellent command of core data science libraries such as NumPy, Pandas, and Scikit-Learn, plus familiarity with a deep-learning framework such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Caffe
  • High level of mathematical competence and proficiency in statistics
  • Solid grasp of standard data science techniques, including supervised and unsupervised machine learning, model cross validation, Bayesian inference, time-series analysis, simple NLP, effective SQL database querying, and using or writing simple APIs for models
  • Ability to develop new algorithms when an innovative solution is needed
  • Leadership mindset focused on growing the technical capabilities of the team
  • Caring attitude toward the personal and professional development of other data scientists, with enthusiasm for nurturing a collaborative and dynamic culture
  • Appreciation for the scientific method as applied to the commercial world
  • Ability to convert business problems into a mathematical framework
  • Resourcefulness in overcoming difficulties through creativity and commitment
