Job description
- We will have you architect systems, write code, and support deployments as an individual contributor.
- We will have you act as the engineering contact point between MPG and the client, working alongside the Project Manager and Engineering Leadership.
- We will have you translate client requirements into tasks for yourself and team members.
- We will have you make the right trade-offs to design systems based on performance, time, and budget.
- We will have you mentor and delegate work to other team members to help them develop as engineers.
- We will have you create estimated cost spreadsheets for online services based on projected concurrent users.
- We will have you cultivate engineering best practices across teams, including modular design, code quality, and testing.
- We will have you work with the Lead and Production to communicate risks, benefits, and future roadmaps.
- We will have you actively mentor the engineering team toward professional accreditation and technical leadership.

This is a permanent, fully remote Principal Backend Engineer role for UK or EU based candidates, working within game development. Requirements
- We need someone with experience in game development and having shipped multiple live games or similar products with a high concurrent user count.
- We need proven experience architecting distributed applications with a high concurrent user base, ideally demonstrated through a released title or robust load tests.
- We need production experience with at least one of Java, Golang, C#, C++, or Kotlin; experience with Python, Node.js, and React is desirable.
- We need solid database experience and the ability to work effectively with both SQL and NoSQL databases.
- We need proven experience with cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure; AWS Professional certification would be advantageous.
- We need proven experience building backend infrastructure using infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform.
- We need proven experience using Kubernetes and Docker to build products at scale.
- We need the ability to autonomously architect and design online services based on a specification.
- We need the ability to navigate change calmly and manage multiple pieces of potentially confidential information.
- We need excellent time management and the ability to work autonomously.
- We need a clear and effective communicator who can discuss technical strategy with non-technical stakeholders and adapt to client needs.
- We need experience building CI/CD pipelines from scratch or improving existing client solutions.
- We need awareness of security and cheating implications of technology choices.
- We need experience using Gen AI for code generation.
- Beneficial: deep expertise in at least one relevant area of backend technology, such as DevOps, Microservices, or Cloud Architecture.
- Beneficial: understanding of how a backend service integrates with the game; experience with Unreal or Unity would be useful but not required.
- Beneficial: understanding of how to use LLMs to process and query structured and unstructured data.
