Job description

As an Advanced Software Development Engineer you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Designing, developing, testing, and supporting custom software applications for process development environments, with a focus on scalable solutions that can transition into production manufacturing.
  • Collaborating closely with R&D, process development, manufacturing, automation, quality, and IT teams to understand technical needs and translate them into practical software tools and systems.
  • Building applications that support process monitoring, production data collection, workflow execution, reporting, visualization, and decision-making in manufacturing and development settings.
  • Developing software solutions that interface directly with PLCs, data historians, IoT platforms, and other connected manufacturing systems.
  • Working hands-on with manufacturing and laboratory hardware to understand equipment functionality, system constraints, data flows, and integration requirements.
  • Creating and enhancing software for HMI, edge compute, and cloud/hybrid environments to support real-time operations, analytics, and continuous improvement.
  • Supporting the development of dashboards, reporting tools, analytics applications, and AI/ML-enabled solutions to improve process understanding, quality, and operational performance.
  • Participating in software architecture, coding, testing, deployment, troubleshooting, and lifecycle support for digital manufacturing applications.
  • Troubleshooting issues across software, hardware, interfaces, and process systems to identify root causes and implement robust corrective actions.
  • Applying sound software engineering practices including version control, code review, testing, maintainability, and structured documentation.
  • Supporting the transition of software solutions from prototype and pilot implementations into scalable manufacturing use cases.
  • Considering cybersecurity, reliability, and operational requirements when developing and deploying software in connected manufacturing environments.
  • Creating technical documentation, user instructions, and support materials to enable sustainable implementation and knowledge transfer.
  • Contributing to a collaborative, technically rigorous environment focused on innovation, experimentation, and continuous improvement., All US-based 3M full time employees will need to sign an employee agreement as a condition of employment with 3M. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Information Systems (completed and verified prior to start).
  • Three (3) years of experience in software development, industrial software, manufacturing software, automation-related software, or related technical work in a private, public, government, or military environment., * Experience designing, developing, testing, and supporting custom software applications.
  • Experience programming in one or more modern languages such as C#, .NET, Python, Java, JavaScript, or similar.
  • Experience working with databases, APIs, system integrations, or connected data environments.
  • Experience developing software for smart manufacturing, process manufacturing, digital process development, or industrial automation environments.
  • Experience building custom shop-floor applications and modifying prototype solutions so they can scale for production use.
  • Experience creating dashboards, reporting tools, data visualizations, analytics applications, or AI/ML-enabled manufacturing solutions.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex issues across software, hardware, and manufacturing process interfaces.
  • Experience with software lifecycle practices such as source control, testing, release management, and deployment support.
  • Experience in R&D, pilot line, lab-to-manufacturing, or production scale-up environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document technical solutions clearly and communicate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

Work location:

  • This role follows an on-site working model, requiring the employee to work at least four days a week in Woodbury, MN, Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status.

Applicable to US Applicants Only:The expected compensation range for this position is $98,964 - $120,957, which includes base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and/or experience.
