Job description
The Head of Datacomms will lead the delivery, technical assurance and commercial performance of the organisation's datacomms and structured cabling function, with a specific focus on Day 2 works across a portfolio of prestige commercial estates. The successful candidate will own the operational and commercial outcome of live client engagements, ensuring installations are delivered to the highest quality standards, on programme and within margin.
This is a senior, client-facing role that blends hands-on technical authority with commercial and contractual acumen. The Head of Datacomms will be the technical decision-maker across structured cabling, blown fibre and adjacent systems, while carrying accountability for cost control, contract compliance and the professional standing of the delivery team on site.
Key ResponsibilitiesDay 2 Works Delivery
- Own the end-to-end delivery of Day 2 (post handover, moves, adds, changes and remedial) datacomms works across the client portfolio, ensuring minimal disruption to live, operational environments.
- Plan, sequence and supervise change-controlled works within occupied and business-critical estates, applying rigorous method statement and permit discipline.
- Maintain a forward schedule of planned and reactive works, balancing resource, client access windows and programme constraints.
- Act as the escalation point for complex technical and delivery issues arising during live works.
Technical Quality and Standards
- Set and enforce installation quality standards for structured cabling and fibre systems, aligned to ISO/IEC 11801, EN 50174 and BS 7671 where applicable.
- Own the design, deployment and troubleshooting of blown fibre systems, including tube schedules, route planning, blowing, termination and testing.
- Provide technical assurance across adjacent systems including AV, unified communications and network infrastructure, coordinating with specialist teams where required.
- Review and approve test results, as-built documentation and technical submittals prior to client issue.
Commercial and Contractual
- Carry commercial accountability for the datacomms function, protecting margin through accurate estimating, change management and cost control.
- Interpret and apply contract terms, including JCT and bespoke subcontract forms, and manage variations, delay notices and compensation events.
- Identify and commercially capture scope changes, ensuring works outside the agreed baseline are properly instructed and valued before proceeding.
- Support pre-sales and tendering, providing technical input, estimates and risk assessment for new opportunities.
Leadership and Client Management
- Lead, mentor and develop site teams, engineers and subcontractors, setting clear expectations on conduct, safety and workmanship.
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with clients, main contractors and consultants, representing the organisation as a credible technical authority.
- Champion health and safety leadership on site, ensuring full compliance with CDM and site-specific requirements.
Requirements
- Demonstrable senior-level experience delivering datacomms and structured cabling works, with a strong track record in Day 2 and live environment delivery.
- Expert working knowledge of blown fibre systems, from design through to testing and commissioning.
- Strong commercial awareness, with proven ability to protect margin, manage variations and control project costs.
- Sound working knowledge of construction and subcontract contracts, including variation, delay and payment mechanisms.
- Familiarity with adjacent systems, including AV, unified communications and network infrastructure, sufficient to coordinate and quality assure integrated delivery.
- Excellent leadership, communication and client-facing skills, with the presence to operate credibly at senior stakeholder level.
Essential Accreditations
- SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme).
- CNIDP (Certified Network Infrastructure Design Professional).
Desirable
- Recognised structured cabling manufacturer accreditations (e.g. Excel, CommScope, Panduit or equivalent).
- Fibre optic testing and certification competencies (e.g. CFOT or equivalent).
- Experience delivering within prestige commercial, venue or high-rise estates.
- Knowledge of Cisco, Meraki or comparable network platforms.
- Full UK driving licence.
