Job description
As our Senior Software Developer - Asset Remote Steering, you will help shape the backend systems that enable this to happen. Working across software engineering, trading, asset optimisation, and operational technology, you will contribute to platforms where reliability, correctness, and performance directly influence how battery assets participate in the market.
This is a role for someone who wants technical ownership, meaningful complexity, and the opportunity to help evolve a business-critical software domain. You will join a team with clear architectural direction, strong collaboration across disciplines, and room to make considered engineering decisions that support both current operations and future growth.
About the Role
You will join our Asset Remote Steering team, reporting to the Head of Ancillary Markets and Remote Solutions, and contribute to systems that are central to how our battery portfolio operates in the energy market.
The role spans architecture, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing production ownership, with a strong focus on reliability and long-term maintainability.
As we continue evolving our technology stack, you will help shape solutions that support live trading activity, operational resilience, and future software architecture.
Your work will span a broad range of responsibilities, including:
- Designing, developing, and maintaining backend software systems that schedule optimisation decisions, deliver steering signals, monitor asset telemetry, and provide reliable data to market participants.
- Contributing to the migration of existing orchestration systems from Scala to C#, ensuring continuity of service, strong code quality, and stable performance throughout the transition.
- Building scalable and resilient services that manage the scheduling, execution, monitoring, and error handling of algorithmic decisions across distributed environments.
- Collaborating closely with quantitative analysts, SCADA operators, and traders to ensure software solutions effectively support both operational requirements and commercial objectives.
- Contributing to architectural decisions, software quality standards, observability practices, and continuous improvements that enhance reliability, performance, and developer experience.
Requirements
You are an experienced software developer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and building systems that have a direct impact on business performance. Analytical and pragmatic in your approach, you are comfortable balancing multiple priorities and making sound engineering decisions in fast-moving environments. Whether you already know energy markets or are new to the industry, you are motivated by learning, collaborating with different disciplines, and taking ownership of the solutions you deliver., * Solid experience in backend software development, with a track record of building and maintaining distributed systems, services, data pipelines, or other large-scale software platforms.
- Strong programming skills in at least one modern language, together with an enthusiasm for learning new technologies and adapting to evolving technology stacks. Experience with Scala or C# would be advantageous but is not required.
- A strong understanding of backend architecture concepts such as microservices, event-driven architectures, orchestration frameworks, messaging systems, and scalable distributed services.
- Experience working with cloud technologies and modern engineering practices, including Microsoft Azure, CI/CD pipelines, version control, containerisation, and infrastructure as code.
- Experience with messaging technologies such as Kafka or RabbitMQ and exposure to industrial communication protocols such as OPC UA would be advantageous.
We recognise that talent and potential can be demonstrated in different ways, so if your experience does not align perfectly with every requirement, we would still encourage you to apply.
