Job description
Runbook Orchestration: Define, author, and maintain the master Technical Cutover Runbook, detailing minute-by-minute technical tasks, owners, dependencies, and estimated durations. Rehearsals & Dress Rehearsals: Plan and lead "dry runs" or cutover dress rehearsals to stress-test the runbook, identify gaps, and refine time estimates. Business Readiness: Ensure the business is prepared for the cutover, including tracking end-user training, operational workarounds during downtime, and helpdesk readiness. Risk Mitigation: Design comprehensive, deterministic rollback and contingency plans for every stage of the cutover process. Go/No-Go Governance / Gatekeeping: Facilitate formal Go/No-Go checkpoint meetings with the technical leads, project teams and key stakeholders heading up to and during the cutover window.
Requirements
Proficiency: Hands-on experience managing infrastructure state changes during a live cutover Environment Alignment: Ensure staging, pre-production, and production environments are strictly synchronised in terms of configuration, data schemas, and security policies prior to launch. Release Alignment: Coordinate with Release Engineers to ensure that correct software versions, third-party dependencies, and patches are uniformly deployed across the environment estate. Environment Drift Detection: Ability to audit and reconcile differences between Staging and Production environments prior to launch. Cloud Architecture: Strong working knowledge of cloud platforms Data Migration: Understanding of database schema deployment tools and data replication/synchronization techniques
Rollback Execution: Ability to safely execute data rollback procedures without corrupting delta data generated during the cutover window. Contingency Management: Maintain a cutover-specific risk register with pre-approved mitigation strategies for likely technical or operational bottlenecks
͏
Command Centre Leadership: Lead the technical "Command Centre" during live cutover windows (often scheduled off-hours/weekends), directing engineers, DBAs, and sysadmins. Command Centre Facilitation: Establish and operate the Cutover Command Centre (physical or virtual) during the live execution window. Stakeholder Triage: Act as the central communication hub. Translate complex technical status updates or blockers into clear, business-focused impacts for executive stakeholders. Data Migration Oversight: Partner with Data Engineers to execute delta data migrations, schema updates, and data validation scripts during the cutover window. Automate the Runbook: Transition manual cutover steps into automated scripts and deployment pipelines using CI/CD tools. Deployment Validation: Implement automated post-deployment smoke tests and health checks to immediately verify system integrity post-cutover.

Requirements Qualifications and Experience: Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Experience: Minimum 3-5 years of hands-on experience in a technical release engineering environment Communication: Excellent verbal/written communication skills in English. Software Architecture Awareness: Understanding of modern application architectures including monolithic, microservices, and distributed systems. Deployment Topologies: Understanding of how architecture influences release sequencing, dependency management, rollback complexity, and zero-downtime deployment strategies DevOps / Platform Engineering: DevOps Practices: Understanding of Infrastructure as code and environment promotion strategies Coding Skills: Coding ability in any of the following programming languages: Javascript, Python, Java, Groovy, Typescript and C++. CI/CD & Automation: Deep expertise with deployment tools such as GitHub Actions Cloud & Networking: Strong understanding of AWS, Azure, or GCP, specifically regarding traffic routing (Route 53, Cloudflare), Load Balancers, and CDN caching/invalidation. Database & Data Migration: Solid grasp of SQL/NoSQL databases, schema migration tools (Liquibase, Flyway), and data replication strategies. Containerisation: Hands-on experience managing deployments in Kubernetes (K8s) or Docker environments. Branching Strategies: Deep understanding of Git workflow models (GitFlow, Trunk Based Development, Feature Branching) and merge conflict resolution. Containerization & Orchestration: Solid working knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes (K8s), including managing Helm charts or Kustomize for multi-environment deployments

Preferred Competencies: Calm Under Pressure: Proven ability to make critical, time-sensitive decisions during high-stress deployment windows. Attention to Detail: A microscopic focus on task tracking, operational dependencies, and resource availability. Cross-Functional Diplomacy: The ability to command respect and direct actions across teams (e.g., pulling engineers, DBA's, product owners, and testing together simultaneously). Meticulous Organisation: An obsessive eye for detail, missing a single dependency in a runbook is not an option. Flexible Hours: Availability to work non-standard hours (nights and weekends) during scheduled cutover windows. Clear Communication: Ability to translate complex technical blockers into concise status updates for non-technical stakeholders. Decisive Facilitation Under Pressure Cutovers frequently run 24/7 over weekends or holidays. When a problem occurs the Cutover PM must remain entirely composed, gather the right technical experts, fa
