Job description
We're organised into three squads: Pitchside Experience, Clubhouse Experience and Platform. This role sits in Clubhouse Experience: the squad focused on club administration- the tools club admins and committees use to run their club day-to-day.
Our engineers come from a variety of different backgrounds. As long as you enjoy learning new things, we'd love to talk to you: we do not ask for formal qualifications or degree requirements for any of our engineering roles.
Your day-to-day
- Set technical direction for Clubhouse Experience, and align other engineers around a shared plan, without needing to review or write every line yourself.
- Act as a force-multiplier: find the highest-leverage problem across the squad and land it through and with other engineers.
- Move fluidly across our Rails API, Postgres data layer, React web app and React Native app to unblock the squad wherever the constraint is.
- Mentor senior engineers and grow the technical bench within Clubhouse Experience and beyond., * Ruby on Rails to write our API layer (there's a highly recommended Rails tutorial here)
- We're moving to React for our web front end, but we're currently using Rails with Turbo, Hotwire and Stimulus
- React Native for our mobile applications
- Postgres for our database layer
- Stripe to power payments: membership fees, club shop and fundraising all run through it
- Currently our infrastructure is on Heroku, but we'll be moving off this soon: join us and help shape where
Level & career progression
We're hiring at IC4 (Lead Engineer) on our engineering career ladder. Scope: multiple teams / a domain. You'll hold the technical lead role for a squad, setting direction with no direct reports or people-management authority. We interview across the whole framework, so if you're not sure exactly what level fits, talk to your recruiter and we'll figure it out together.
Requirements
- you have experience being the tech lead of a squad
- you're full-stack (preferred), but we care more about your track record leading technical direction than any one stack
- you have strong experience in software development
- you're comfortable making architecture calls other engineers will build on for years
- you enjoy the cross-team alignment work: writing the docs and having the conversations that get a squad pointed the same way
- you have a product mindset: you're comfortable critiquing designs and understanding user journeys to help land on the best solution, not just implementing what's handed to you
- you want to help shape how club admins and committees experience TFP
You don't need prior Ruby experience to apply. If you're a strong backend engineer with experience in another language (e.g. Node, Python, Java, PHP, Go), we'd love to hear from you: we'll support you in picking up Rails. (Our Platform Senior Software Engineer and Principal Software Engineer roles are the exception and do require hands-on Ruby/Rails experience.)
