Job description
- Data Model Development: Build, optimize, and maintain multiple data models within Power BI to serve as the foundation for executive reporting and analysis.
- Data Integration: Extract, transform, and cleanse data (ETL) from diverse sources, including department data warehouses, Excel spreadsheets, SharePoint, and Access databases.
- Advanced DAX Formulas: Develop custom measures using DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) to address complex, multi-angled reporting requirements.
- Schema Design: Apply best practices in schema design, relationships, and performance optimization to ensure efficient system operations.
Dashboards, Apps, & Reporting
- Interactive Dashboards: Create and maintain customized reports, interactive dashboards, charts, and graphs using Power BI and Microsoft Excel.
- Process Automation: Develop Microsoft Forms and Power Apps to simplify and streamline data entry and collection workflows.
- Data Integrity: Collaborate across offices to improve data collection methods, reporting accuracy, and cross-functional knowledge sharing.
Training, Documentation, & IT Collaboration
- Staff Training: Train Finance and Budget division staff on Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, and other Microsoft tools during weekly meetings to foster a data-driven culture.
- Documentation: Create and maintain a comprehensive, step-by-step Desk Guide/User Manual covering data schemas, navigation, and reporting procedures to promote team self-sufficiency.
- IT Coordination: Coordinate with internal and contractor IT departments to streamline user permissions, manage access controls, and resolve Power BI technical issues.
Key Deliverables & Reporting Schedule
The contractor will be responsible for executing the following data production schedule with high accuracy and professionalism:
- Daily: Extract and upload Standard Accounting & Reporting System (STARS) data into the master data file, update Power Pivot lookup/fact tables, and ensure correct record coding.
- Monthly: Populate executive tables, charts, and dashboards post-month-end closing; report obligation and cost variances to HQ (by the 10th); prepare PowerPoint and SharePoint budget presentations.
- Quarterly & Annually: Validate and reconcile HQ Execution Summaries; generate the annual Budget Execution Review PowerPoint presentation for HQ DOE by October 31st.
- Bi-Annually: Update and publish the user manual covering Power Pivot data schemas, Power Query, SharePoint, and Microsoft Teams best practices.
Requirements
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Business Systems Analyst to provide comprehensive data and business systems support for the United States Department of Energy (DOE) at the Hanford Site.
In this role, you will bridge the gap between financial data and actionable insights, split approximately 60% supporting the Budget (BUD) Division and 40% supporting the Finance (FIN) Division. The ideal candidate will possess advanced Excel skills and intermediate-to-advanced proficiency in the Microsoft Power Platform (Power BI, Power Query, Power Pivot, and DAX) to build data models, automate workflows, and generate critical federal financial reports., * Education: High School Diploma or higher.
- Advanced Skill Level (36+ months experience):
- Microsoft Excel (Advanced formulas, data manipulation, VLOOKUPs/Index Match, formatting).
- Intermediate Skill Level (12+ months experience):
- Power BI, Power Query, and Power Pivot (including extensive use of DAX).
- Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and SharePoint.
- Data mining from large enterprise data warehouses.
- Basic Skill Level (6+ months experience):
- Microsoft Outlook.
Preferred Experience
- Strong independent task management, prioritization, and communication skills (written and verbal).
- Experience maintaining databases in Microsoft Access or similar software.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Teams.
- Federal Context: Prior knowledge of Federal Government/Department of Energy (DOE) budget execution principles and financial systems.
- Hanford Knowledge: Familiarity with the Hanford Site mission, activities, and strategic priorities is highly preferred., * Bachelor's (Preferred), * Department of Energy: 5 years (Required)
