Job description
Digital Solutions is responsible for the development and management of RWE Americas application and custom software development portfolio. These applications power our day-to-day business, connecting operational data to enable business decisions and drive outcomes that improve the development, performance and availability of over 160 renewable energy sites with over13GW of wind, solar, and battery assets.
The Senior Software Engineer II drives the engineering evolution of the Smart Data Pipeline (SDP) platform - a cloudbased, Azure-hosted system that automates data ingestion, cleaning, analysis, forecasting, alerting, and measurement equipment lifecycle management for wind energy assets and potential solar/BESS assets in the future. This role combines hands-on software development, architecture leadership, and cross-functional technical ownership, integrating data streams including met mast, lidar, and sensor systems. As a Senior Software Engineer II, you will operate as a multidomain technical expert, sets architectural direction, mentors engineers, and influences technical strategy across the Digital Solutions organization.
Role Responsibilities:
- Technical Leadership & Architecture
- Architect and own scalable, cloud-native data pipeline solutions integrating data systems across the SDP platform
- Define system architecture, data flows, and service boundaries across ingestion, pre-analysis, analysis, alerting, and monitoring pipelines
- Create and maintain architecture diagrams, blueprints, and reusable design patterns that guide development teams
- Drive technology decisions, platform standards, and architectural guidelines; lead architecture reviews and technical decision
- Data Pipeline & Cloud Platform Engineering
- Lead design and implementation of data collection, pre-analysis, analysis, forecasting, alert, and VMM pipelines, ensuring data quality, reliability, and validation
- Own solution delivery on Azure-based platforms including Azure Functions, pipeline scheduling, cloud storage, and data lake integration across DEV, UAT, and PROD environments
- Define and enforce best practices for CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, and observability frameworks (logging, alerting, monitoring dashboards)
- System Integration & Software Delivery
- Lead integration of measurement systems (lidar, met mast, sensor networks) with enterprise IT platforms, ensuring data consistency, reliability, and traceability Lead end-to-end feature delivery (Design Build Deploy
- Operate); review and approve code across multiple services, enforcing security, performance, and coding standards
- Technical Governance, Stakeholder Collaboration & Mentorship
- Define and enforce engineering standards, coding guidelines, and architectural patterns; ensure compliance with enterprise architecture and data governance policies.
- Act as primary technical liaison between product owners, business stakeholders, and development teams, translating business requirements into technical architectures and delivery plans
- Mentorship & Engineering Culture
- Mentor engineers across multiple levels; lead knowledge sharing, documentation, and capability-building initiatives that foster a culture of engineering excellence and continuous improvement
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry certification/experience
- One or more of the following certifications strongly preferred
- Microsoft Azure certifications (e.g., AZ-900, AZ-204, AZ-305) or equivalent cloud platform credential
- Minimum 7 years of relevant software engineering or data platform experience, including hands-on development and technical leadership roles
- Proven experience designing and managing complex, multi-stage data pipelines (ingestion, analysis, forecasting, alerting) with strong expertise in data cleaning, transformation, and validation workflows
- Demonstrated experience architecting and delivering solutions on Azure-based platforms, including Kubernetes (AKS), Containers, Azure Functions, data lake integration, and multi-environment deployment management
- Experience with distributed systems, microservices, messaging systems (e.g., RabbitMQ), event-driven architecture, and API design and integration
- Experience in designing access control for applications, specifically design and/or sign off on access control schemes for human-to-system, and system-to-system access
- Experience leading complex, enterprise-scale IT implementations involving coordination of multiple workstreams and multi-level stakeholder communications, delivering in Agile or hybrid methodologies
- Strong background in frontend development using React and Typescript, backend development using C#, Python, Terraform, or equivalent infrastructure as code experience; experience with SQL querying, large-scale datasets, and data formats such as Parquet and CSV
- Experience with both Linux and Windows server to be able to own Dockerfiles for both platforms and own SDP's 3rd party integrations (like with Bullfrog)
- Experience working with global team with multiple time zones from Asia, Europe and Americas
- The following experience is a plus:
- Experience with Dapr (Distributed Application Runtime).
- Measurement systems (lidar, met mast, SCADA, or sensor networks) and operational data ingestion
- Time-series ML pipelines, forecasting model integration, or data science workflow design
- Climate, mesoscale, or wind resource assessment data processing workflows
- Hands-on experience with Azure Databricks and Delta Lake, including medallion architecture
- (Bronze/Silver/Gold), Structured Streaming, and Delta Live Tables/Lakeflow pipelines, is a significant plus
- Experience with Apache Airflow (DAG authoring, task orchestration, scheduling, and monitoring) is highly desirable and will be considered a strong differentiator, given its direct applicability to coordinating SDP's multistage ingestion, analysis, and alerting pipelines
- Expert-level, multi-domain technical knowledge with the ability to resolve highly complex cross-system problems and create strategic, preventative solutions
- Strong diagnostics skills to decrease reliance on UHP team for diagnostics
- Demonstrated ability to design cost-effective systems for suboptimal deployments
- Deep understanding of Azure architecture, distributed systems, and enterprise data platform design
- Strong proficiency with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps tooling, and observability frameworks (logging, metrics, monitoring)
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills; able to lead cross-team initiatives and serve as a liaison between business and engineering
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers across multiple levels and drive a culture of technical excellence and innovation
- Ability to oversee multiple projects and domains simultaneously while maintaining high quality and delivery standards
- Ability to produce clear architecture documentation, technical specifications, and engineering standards
- Proficiency in collaboration and engineering tooling such as Azure DevOps, Jira, Confluence, GitHub, or equivalent
- Intellectually curious, self-directed, and committed to staying current with emerging technologies and engineering practices
- Detail-oriented with strong technical acumen and the ability to translate complex domain requirements into sound engineering decisions
- Demonstrated interest in the renewable energy industry and a commitment to supporting RWE's clean energy mission
- This position is an office-based role with some travel and visits to other RWE Americas office and field locations
- Must be able to sit, walk, or stand for long durations of time
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. RWE Americas is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of employment visas at this time.
