Job description

The job of Network Engineer is done for the purpose/s of the overall design, implementation, management, security and maintenance of the networking infrastructure used throughout the district. Their duties include designing and supporting networking systems and related software. They provide support for the day-today operation of the network, training other team members on proper deployment methods, network troubleshooting, and best practices. They work closely with the Security Engineer to ensure we meet proper compliance of their supported systems following the Information Technology guidelines. This person may also be required to write test plans, integration plans, and guides for technologies and services being deployed. They may be asked to assist the Network Architect in planning new network systems and the potential analyzing impact on existing resources. They will also be required to assist in maintaining support contracts for their supported systems. They will be required to work with other technology staff to support the overall technology infrastructure within the district. This Job reports to Assigned Supervisor Essential Functions Adheres to district policies regarding use of computers and data access (e.g. utilizing strong passwords, safeguarding data, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with district policies and guidelines. Administers district policies regarding use of computers and data access (e.g. updating Directory Service Client, set passwords, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with district policy and departmental guidelines. Designs effective and efficient computer networks (e.g. internet, intranet, email services, content filtering, directory services; switches, firewall, content filtering, radius, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring they are compliant with district policy and departmental guidelines. Designs , maintains, and tests backup and disaster backup recovery systems for the purpose of ensuring that data is protected and secure. Develops and maintains internal documentation for the purpose of enhancing staff ability to properly utilize provided network systems and applications. Installs and configures reliable network-based servers, etc. (e.g. Windows and Linux servers and their associated storage area networks (SAN, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability and resources for use by District personnel. Installs patches and/or upgrades, and supports district systems including but not limited to (e.g. Directory Services, email, and server operating systems, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring high availability of these systems. Installs , configures and troubleshoots workstation clients, routers, switches for the purpose of ensuring reliable tools are available to District Staff. Maintains a variety of manual and electronic files and/or records (e.g. permission levels, network identification, security access, licenses, work logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, troubleshooting and audit trails. Monitors the status of the District-wide area networks and equipment and site level local area networks for the purpose of ensuring availability of network files and peripheral devices. Participates in meetings, workshops and/or trainings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions. Performs initial server and router set-ups (e.g. installation, testing, configuring, assigning passwords, security clearances, imaging, etc.) for the purpose of meeting the basic computer processing needs of the users and ensuring system hardening. Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. procedures, documentation, reports, memos, email, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information. Provides training and in-service in general computer use and/or security, software applications, and file server operations for the purpose of ensuring the efficient use of computers and/or software application. Researches current and emerging technologies for the purpose of making recommendations for implementing systems that would improve the current infrastructure. Researches software applications for the purpose of recommending standardized applications in accordance with the district's technology goals. Responds to requests for help, repairs, training, and/or upgrades, etc. by telephone, email, work order, ticket, chat, etc. for the purpose of providing information, scheduling appointments and/or referring to alternate resources. Troubleshoots issues with user computer workstations and District servers (e.g. application software inquiries, connectivity issues, peripheral malfunctions, etc.) for the purpose of providing maximum availability of service. Other Functions Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: teaching technical topics to non-technical audiences; adhering to safety practices; planning and managing projects; and gathering information to diagnose problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: current generation and legacy computer operating and networking systems (e.g. Windows, MAC, Novell, etc.); computer hardware/network and troubleshooting techniques; network security; and office application software. ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: developing effective working relationships; communicating with persons with diverse technical knowledge and skills; providing clear instructions; and setting priorities. Work Environment The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, 10% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment. Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field is required in in Information System and Data Security. Education: Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area with an emphasis in networking technology.
