Job description

The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in Syracuse University is looking for an individual to teach JNL 221 Foundations of Data and Digital Journalism on Monday/Wednesday 3:45-5:05 during the Fall 2026 semester (3 credits).

Course Description: In this skills-based course, students survey digital best practices in data journalism, web presentation, and data visualization. Students will study the basic functions and integral properties of data analysis, HTML/CSS, and data visualization/presentation.

Requirements

Successful candidates will have experience applying data to their work in journalism as reporters, editors, and/or newsroom managers. They need the patience to work with students who may have no prior data experience and who might have some fear of numbers generally. Our goal is to start them slow to understand basic data-table organization, to help them see the power of spreadsheets and to overcome their apprehension about including data in their work. Students build toward finding a story in a dataset of their choice, creating visualizations using Datawrapper, writing a data-driven story, and presenting that story on a web page they design and publish to GitHub.
