Job description

  • Under direction of the Supervisor of Application Development (under the Deputy Director of Capital Integrated Data Solutions), design, implement, maintain and support IT automation and monitoring solutions for the Capital Division's infrastructure and project-tracking platforms to ensure application and system availability.
  • Configure and tune enterprise monitoring and automation tools; analyze, select, and deploy emerging technologies to improve reliability and reduce manual effort, in compliance with agency standards.
  • Oversee Event, Patch, Release and Change Management activities for the Division's applications and supporting environments.
  • Produce outage reports and configure automated notifications and alerts so stakeholders are informed when outages occur or when changes are deployed to the production environment.
  • Develop and maintain standards, guidelines, and technical specifications for automation and monitoring; recommend hardware, software, and server requirements for the supporting environment.
  • Develop new modules and applications and maintain and improve the Capital Division's existing Windows-based software, written in Visual Basic, ASP .NET and Access.
  • Work with the team to plan features for project-tracking tools and write clear, maintainable code to implement them.
  • Create and run SQL procedures and views to move, clean, and organize project data so staff have accurate, timely information.
  • Test new features and changes to identify and fix defects, then tune performance and update scripts or settings after deployment.
  • Write step-by-step guides and reports documenting how the software and tools work; provide training and support to staff, guiding them through fixes in easy-to-understand steps.

Requirements

  1. A baccalaureate degree in computer science, engineering or a related field from an accredited college and four years of satisfactory full-time experience related to IT automation engineering, monitoring engineering, management of infrastructure; or

  2. Eight years of satisfactory full-time experience related to IT automation engineering, monitoring engineering, management of infrastructure;

  3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above.

Preferred Skills

  1. Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. 2. Expertise in Excel, Access or other similar numerical/data analysis programs. 3. Well-developed skills in associated database programming languages with an emphasis on MS SQL Server. 4. Comprehension of query plan, good query tuning skills and diverse experience improving query performance. 5. Good working knowledge of Object Oriented Programming concepts and basic data structures. 6. Knowledge of SQL queries and data views. 7. Familiarity with Visual Basic for Applications and Macros. 8. Experience with enterprise monitoring/alerting tools and IT automation or scripting to reduce manual effort. 9. Familiarity with Event, Patch, Release, and Change Management processes (ITIL-aligned). 10. Ability to meet deadlines and identify and resolve issues with minimal direction.
