Job description

The Telecommunications Mechanic II installs, maintains, and repairs the telephone and telecommunication systems and wiring aboard the program's berthing barges and other service craft. The role blends skilled trade work with inspection and reporting duties, since the mechanic also carries out the visual and operational checks that confirm each craft's systems are sound before and after service. The Virginia opening covers the Hampton Roads waterfront, while the Maine opening supports craft in the Kittery and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard area., * Install, troubleshoot, program, maintain, modify, and repair voice and non-voice communication systems, including switching equipment, consoles, relay racks, radios, intercom and public address systems, alarm systems, and telephone key systems.

  • Run cable and wire to telephone sets, terminal connectors, lugs, pins, and screws, and terminate the equipment associated with non-voice circuits and local area network data circuits.
  • Repair or replace damaged and deteriorated telephone and telecommunication wiring from the pier-side connection point onto the craft, including telephone jacks.
  • Support general electrical inspection, maintenance, and repair of shipboard electrical equipment such as distribution panels, outlets, switches, wiring, lighting fixtures, and power cords.
  • Test units and systems after repair to confirm proper operation, and document work in accordance with program maintenance procedures.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizen able to obtain and hold a Secret clearance, with an active or interim clearance at start of performance.
  • Demonstrated experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting voice and data communication systems and general IT support.
  • Working knowledge of telephone key systems, LAN cabling, intercom and public address systems, and alarm or interior communication systems.
  • Ability to read and apply technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Comfortable working aboard marine craft in an active shipyard, and able to comply with OSHA shipyard employment standards (29 CFR 1915) and related safety directives.

Preferred:

  • Associate degree in information technology, electronics, or a related field, or equivalent technical training, consistent with the System Support Specialist occupational standard.
  • Prior experience supporting Navy, marine, or other maritime communication systems.

Compensation will be determined in accordance with the applicable wage determination and will be commensurate with the selected candidate's experience and qualifications.

Pay: $39.68 - $43.23 per hour, * 401(k)
