Job description

Description of Duties:

  • Collect fish and environmental data in freshwater, estuarine, and nearshore marine environments of the West Coast region; field collection involves harsh outdoor conditions in/around water and may involve driving vehicles and/or boats and trailers and occasional (days-to-weeks) ship-survey assistance.

  • Implement occasional laboratory experiments and data processing; perform data visualization and analysis.

  • Conduct literature reviews to extract data and published relationships between ecological outcomes and potential stressors or habitat metrics.

  • In collaboration with team members, produce tools that improve transparency and efficiency of management decision-making and permitting, integrating environmental stressors into the NW Salmon Life Cycle Model (LCM) framework.

  • Share comprehensive workflow protocols and research products so others can interact with and understand the work.

  • Write reports, contribute to journal manuscripts, and present results at regional meetings and scientific conferences, as needed., Required (Deliverables):

  • Reliable participation and contributions in field and/or laboratory activities coordinated by the NWFSC.

  • Documentation that samples/data were collected, stored, and processed using established protocols.

  • Reproducible workflows documented; analysis products stored in an accessible, organized way.

  • Written status reports and other ad hoc communications as needed.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college/university with a major related to the task order, with emphasis in fisheries, ecology, natural sciences, mathematics, statistics, oceanography, or hydrology.

  • Experience: Three (3) or more years of experience related to the task order, including familiarity with the species and habitats managed by NOAA Fisheries in the West Coast region.

Desired:

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a related field - may be substituted for four (4) years of experience.

CERTIFICATIONS: Required:

  • Valid U.S. driver's license - required and maintained throughout the period of performance.

  • Public trust suitability; background investigation cleared prior to beginning performance.

  • Government-required training to be completed within 5 business days of start: NOAA IT Security, NOAA Safety, Sexual Assault/Sexual Harassment Prevention & Response (NAM 1330-52.222-70(b)(6)), and Records Management 101., Required:

  • Strong quantitative skills including familiarity with modeling and data analysis; familiarity with software such as R, GitHub, etc.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication; experience writing reports and publishing peer-reviewed articles.

  • Familiarity with common workplace software such as Google Suite and Microsoft Office.

  • Ability to manage workload, stay organized, and produce high-quality work efficiently; able to work independently and on interdisciplinary teams.
