Job description

DevOps Engineer to own infrastructure and automation for their embedded software team. This isn't a pure cloud role. You'll be physically co-located with a hardware team in Falmouth, MA - mechanical engineers, board-level electronics designers, and field technicians - while reporting to the VP of Software. You are the connective tissue between the embedded world and the company-wide software group.

Your job is to bring mature DevOps practice to firmware: CI/CD, HIL, SIL, provisioning, configuration, and deployment - all of it running on BOAB Ventures' cloud-based infrastructure and integrated with their hardware platforms. Within 60 days, you'll have a CI/CD/HIL/SIL plan drafted and partially live, have improved provisioning and configuration systems already in production, and be deeply integrated with both teams.

This role goes to sea. You will personally participate in buoy deployments, recovery operations, and at-sea testing several times a year. That means lifting and handling equipment on a small boat in open water, communicating clearly under field conditions, and performing fine hardware manipulations while underway. This is not optional. It is one of the core reasons the position exists, and it is what makes Spear's software better than anyone else's.

What You'll Do

  • Own and develop the CI/CD/SIL/HIL testing pipeline for BOAB Ventures's embedded software from the ground up.
  • Evaluate current provisioning and configuration systems and drive substantial, production-ready improvements within your first 60 days.
  • Mesh our cloud-based software systems with their hardware platforms - accelerating automation and error checking across all aspects of embedded software deployment and configuration.
  • Coordinate with our other engineers to translate system requirements into actionable software tasks and architecture.
  • Serve as the informal interface between the embedded/hardware team and the company-wide software group - keep both sides moving.
  • Go to sea. Participate in buoy deployments, recovery operations, and at-sea testing multiple times per year.
  • Mentor junior engineers as the team scales.

Requirements

Technical Requirements

  • Infrastructure & DevOps (Essential)
  • Expert-level Infrastructure as Code - Pulumi or Terraform
  • Expert-level Docker and Kubernetes
  • Expert-level CI/CD with GitHub Actions
  • Expert-level Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing
  • Proficiency in AWS and/or other cloud platforms
  • Experience deploying to air-gapped environments
  • Experience self-hosting on bare metal servers
  • Linux environment - daily driver, not occasional visitor

Software & Networking (Essential)

  • Proficiency in Python or TypeScript
  • Solid networking fundamentals
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity compliance frameworks: CMMC, PCI, or SOC

Communication

  • Excellent verbal communication - you'll be on a boat, in the field, and in front of engineers from multiple disciplines
  • Good written communication for documentation and cross-team coordination

Desired Skills (Optional)

  • Maritime operations experience: small boat handling, over-the-side equipment work, field repair, logistics planning for sea operations.
  • Prior military service or a demonstrated history working alongside military customers and personnel.
