Job description

Our work spans customer-facing features, underwriting automation, internal tools, and the structures that make all of those easier to build.

You'll spend most of your time adding value to our customers, but we hope you're the kind of engineer who also asks:

"Can we solve this in a way that makes our future lives easier?"

If that sounds like fun, keep reading.

What you'll be doing

Most of your time will be spent delivering business value across our stack.

We work closely with Product and Risk, and expect engineers to be part of the conversation from problem definition through delivery.

That means things like:

  • Working directly with Product, Risk and other stakeholders to understand the problem, challenge assumptions, and design pragmatic solutions

  • Taking ownership of features from initial discussions through production rollout

  • Identifying opportunities to simplify, automate or improve the system

  • Helping the team evolve through design discussions, code reviews and technical direction.

What we're building towards

Today we're building Balance's core underwriting capabilities.

Tomorrow we want those capabilities to become smarter, easier to evolve, and increasingly automated.

We'll get there by investing in things like:

  • Automating underwriting decisions

  • Turning manual operational work into tooling and automation

  • Building configurable capabilities instead of customer-specific implementations

  • Using data to improve underwriting, product decisions and customer experience

  • Making our systems easier to evolve as both the product and the company grow

Our stack

  • Server-side development (Node.js is strongly preferred).
  • Frontend development using React or a similar framework.
  • Production-scale databases such as PostgreSQL and MongoDB, including optimization and performance tuning.
  • AWS cloud services, including Serverless, Kubernetes, and Docker.
  • RESTful API design and modern service-oriented architectures.

Requirements

Experience building production software

  • Comfortable turning features into executable plans

  • Experience building backend systems (full-stack experience is a plus)

  • Comfortable working directly with engineers, product managers and business stakeholders

  • Curiosity about the product, the business, and the people using it

  • The ability to balance pragmatism with long-term thinking
