Job description

Join the Squad Delivery Insights Dashboard team as we provide performance insights to hundreds of Rabobank squads. We are looking for a senior software engineer with strong engineering fundamentals to help build the core components of our data platform. Whether your primary background is in Python or another modern software engineering ecosystem, we value excellence in software design, engineering practices, and building maintainable systems. We are looking for someone who takes initiative, is eager to learn new skills, communicates openly, and thrives in a collaborative environment.

Create clean, reliable, and reusable software components and services that power ingestion, transformation, and data-driven products. You're not a "data engineer"; you're a software craftsman in a data environment. You build reusable, scalable, and high-quality components that make our data platform robust and future-proof.

While our current implementation is built in Python, we believe that strong software engineering practices, design patterns, and architectural thinking are transferable across technologies. Therefore, we welcome experienced software engineers from different language backgrounds who are willing to learn and work with Python.

  • Build modular Python packages using modern engineering patterns and practices.

  • Own artifact management end-to-end, including publishing, versioning and governance.

  • Develop reusable components that fit into our Medallion Architecture.

  • Integrate APIs aligned with OpenAPI standards and resilient design patterns.

  • Ensure high code quality through testing, automation, linting, scanning, and robust CI/CD pipelines.

  • Work across our technology stack: Azure Synapse, Databricks, cloud storage (ADLS/S3), and containerized environments.

  • Improve developer experience through standardization, shared components, and engineering best practices.

  • Contribute to our transition toward a platform-agnostic, modernized data architecture.

  • 36 hours per week

  • Work with technologies including Python, Spark/PySpark, Azure Synapse, Databricks, and cloud storage platforms.

  • 9.5 million customers worldwide

  • Build reusable, scalable Python packages and services that support data ingestion, transformation, and product development across the organisation.

  • Ensure high engineering standards through automated testing, code reviews, CI/CD pipelines, governance practices, and continuous quality improvements.

  • Collaborate with engineers, architects, and platform teams to modernise data capabilities and improve developer experience across the technology landscape.

Requirements

  • Strong software engineering expertise, gained through building and operating production-grade applications and services.
  • Professional experience with Python or another modern programming language such as Java, C#, Go, Scala, Kotlin, or similar, combined with a willingness to learn and work with Python.
  • Solid grounding in software design patterns, architecture, and engineering best practices.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automation, and artifact management.
  • Strong understanding of data modelling, distributed processing, and resilient integration patterns.
  • Comfortable mentoring others and contributing to engineering standards.

Nice to have

  • Infrastructure as Code experience.
  • API management / gateway experience.
  • Experience with platform modernization or cloud migrations.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation and observability to monitor and improve system behaviour.
