Lead Engineer (Specialist) in DIGITAL ENTERPRISE SERVICES

• Working from abroad policy (subject to approval and policy within the team), A typical day starts with a stand-up alongside a cross-functional team of engineers and delivery stakeholders. This is where you review progress across projects and environments, surface any blockers, and align on priorities for the day - particularly around deployments, platform stability, and upcoming releases.

Next, you'll focus on hands-on technical work for the projects you're currently assigned to. This might include refining CI/CD pipelines in GitHub, implementing infrastructure changes using Terraform, or troubleshooting issues across a wide range of Azure services such as Azure Networking, Data Factory, App Services, Azure SQL Databases, or Entra ID. You'll often be working across multiple environments (dev, uat, production), ensuring configurations remain consistent, secure, and aligned with best practices.

As the lead engineer, a significant part of your role involves supporting and mentoring other engineers. You'll review pull requests, provide feedback on infrastructure and pipeline design, and guide the team towards reusable, scalable patterns, ensuring agreed engineering standards and best practices are consistently applied across projects. This might involve walking someone through secure networking design, reviewing architecture documentation, or explaining why a particular deployment or authentication approach was chosen.

If you're in the office, you'll grab lunch in the canteen with colleagues or head out for a walk if the weather is nice.

In the afternoon, you may have technical workshops or refinement calls for projects. These sessions typically focus on creating tickets that map to project requirements, solution design, security considerations, and upcoming changes to the platform, and often involve working through designs with developers, architects, and delivery leads to agree on the best technical approach.

Following these sessions, you may spend time documenting standards and best practices, creating or updating project documents, and progressing documentation tasks for tickets you're currently assigned - for example, defining a new deployment pattern, documenting environment configuration, or capturing decisions made during design sessions. This ensures knowledge is shared across the wider team and enables others to confidently pick up follow-on tasks without dependency on a single individual.

Before logging off, you'll typically tidy up the backlog, update progress on technical tasks, and make notes for upcoming meetings, such as design reviews, security discussions, or planning sessions scheduled for the following day.

Role Requirements

As part of this role you will be responsible for monitoring elements of Azure pertinent to our applications and troubleshooting any issues which may fall from there. You will have responsibility for running certain features on the platform, such as deploying golden images, managing subscriptions, building resources, or upgrades of App Services. They will also help the Microsoft Power Platform and Azure Data teams with platform support and build.

The role requires good levels of development competency, experience in Agile and DevOps methodologies and the ability to inform best practice design. It will also require mentoring and peer reviewing along with advising on more complex operational incidents and problems

• Experience of operating platforms in a controlled environment with strict change control.
• Demonstrable experience deploying, configuring, and supporting Azure App Services, including application hosting, networking, security integration, scaling, monitoring, and troubleshooting in enterprise environments
• Strong hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, including the design, deployment, and maintenance of reusable, modular Azure infrastructure through automated CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with Azure monitoring, logging, and observability tools.
• Preference to work as part of a team rather than individually.
• Wide Microsoft Azure experience and CAF knowledge.
• Microsoft Azure administration skills / certification.
• Windows / Linux Admin.
• Automation scripting (e.g. Terraform).
• Good knowledge of agile delivery methodologies as associated toolsets such as Jira
• Experience building and maintaining Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines that provision and deploy Azure resources using Terraform, incorporating version control, automated testing, and release governance.

Desirable Criteria

It would also be beneficial, but not necessary, to have some of the following:

• Experience with SharePoint Online.
• Good .NET and C# skills.
• SSIS skills and data integration/migration software.
• In-depth experience of solution delivery using the full Software Development Lifecycle. This should include experience of working with Agile and DevOps methodologies working with continuous delivery, automatic regression testing, TDD and monitoring.
• Good knowledge of SOLR and Zookeeper
• Good understanding of AKS
• Experience of Microsoft Power Platform and Dynamics 365 environments.
• Experience with website fundamentals including Content Delivery Networks (such as Akamai) and Content Management Systems (such as Sitecore).
