Job description
We are seeking a highly skilled and collaborative Senior Next.js Developer to join a large-scale UK government agency. You will be a core member of a blended agile delivery squad consisting of civil servants and supplier staff, building user-centred, high-volume digital services. These critical services facilitate nearly 5 billion digital interactions and process tens of millions of customer transactions annually., In this role, you will take ownership of designing, building, and supporting accessible, responsive Front End applications primarily using Next.js and React. You will seamlessly integrate these user interfaces with a modern API-first ecosystem built on Java Spring Boot and AWS serverless technologies. Operating at SFIA Level 4, you will take on complex technical challenges, champion modern software engineering standards, and actively mentor colleagues to uplift the overall capability of the multidisciplinary team., * Software Development: Design, build, and support robust, user-centred web applications using Next.js, React, and modern JavaScript/TypeScript, ensuring clean, performant, and maintainable code.
- API Integration: Integrate intuitive Front End interfaces with Back End Java Spring Boot microservices and AWS serverless components (such as Lambda and API Gateway).
- Standards & Accessibility: Ensure all digital services rigorously meet the Government Digital and Data (GDD) Service Standard, WCAG 2.2 accessibility guidelines, and secure-by-design principles.
- Agile Collaboration: Work collaboratively within blended, multi-supplier agile squads alongside Product Owners, Agile Delivery Managers, Business Analysts, and SDETs to define acceptance criteria and deliver value in iterative sprints.
- Quality Assurance & CI/CD: Strengthen continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, embedding automated testing practices (TDD/BDD) to ensure high-quality release cycles and robust service reliability.
- Service Assessments: Actively contribute to production readiness and formal government service assessments across the discovery, Alpha, private beta, and live phases of delivery.
- Mentorship & Leadership: Facilitate knowledge transfer, conduct code reviews, and coach team members to build in-house capability and support sustainable, long-term service ownership.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Core Programming: Deep, commercial expertise in developing scalable web applications using Next.js, React.js, and modern Front End tooling.
- Public Sector Delivery: Proven experience delivering secure, user-centric digital services aligned to the GDS Service Standard within complex, high-volume government environments.
- Accessibility First: Comprehensive understanding of inclusive design and strict adherence to WCAG 2.2 accessibility compliance.
- Modern Architecture: Strong practical knowledge of API-first design principles, interacting with RESTful microservices, and working within cloud-native environments.
- Quality & Automation: Hands-on experience integrating Front End code into CI/CD pipelines (eg, Jenkins, GitHub Actions) and writing comprehensive automated tests (eg, Jest, Cypress, Playwright).
- Agile Mindset: A strong track record of operating effectively in blended, multidisciplinary agile environments, adapting smoothly to legislative or policy-driven changes.
Requirements
Security Clearance: Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) required, with the willingness and eligibility to obtain Security Check (SC) clearance prior to accessing production environments or live data., * Broader Tech Stack: Experience or familiarity with Ruby on Rails, to assist in migrating, maintaining, or integrating with existing Legacy Front End estates.
- Cross-Government Platforms: Prior experience integrating digital products with strategic cross-government capabilities, such as GOV.UK One Login, GOV.UK Pay, GOV.UK Notify, or digital wallets.
- Legacy Transformation: Experience supporting large-scale digital transformation programmes migrating away from Legacy systems (eg, older Java, AIX, Oracle, or Mainframe environments).
- Cloud Infrastructure: Familiarity with AWS serverless patterns, infrastructure-as-code principles, and proactive observability monitoring.
