Job description

The Technical Services Specialist supports the Technical Services Manager in reviewing project specifications, developing mix designs, coordinating material testing, and ensuring product and procedural compliance with industry and customer requirements. This role acts as a vital link between quality control, sales, operations, and external agencies, ensuring the consistent performance of Ready-Mix Concrete, asphalt, and aggregate products. The position demands strong technical acumen, effective communication, and organizational skills. Essential Functions of the Position: MIX DESIGN & SPECIFICATION COMPLIANCE:

  • Analyze and interpret project specifications to ensure compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, ACI, Caltrans, and other industry standards.
  • Develop custom mix designs for ready-mix concrete, asphalt, and aggregates based on performance criteria and customer needs.
  • Prepare submittal packages and coordinate with outside engineers for certification when required.
  • Collaborate with Technical Services Manager, Quality Control Manager, and field technicians to conduct trial batches and material evaluations.

TESTING COORDINATION & DOCUMENTATION:

  • Determine and schedule necessary testing to validate mix performance and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain and log material test results from internal and external labs for documentation and analysis.
  • Provide technical support to sales and operations teams through mix design recommendations and troubleshooting.
  • Address customer concerns regarding material performance, field testing, and compliance.
  • Serve as a point of contact for customers, contractors, and regulatory agencies for product application support., The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. of equipment or material samples.
  • Regular travel to job sites, batch plants, and testing locations.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching during lab and field work.
  • Tolerance to outdoor weather with exposure to heat, cold, dust, and noise during field visits.
  • Occasional kneeling or crouching for sample collection and equipment setup.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and reflective vests.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, testing instruments, and computers for extended periods.

Requirements

  • Solid understanding of concrete, asphalt, and aggregate materials and production.
  • Knowledge of ASTM, ACI, AASHTO, and Caltrans standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail in managing test data, submittals, and documentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, mix design software, and lab data systems.
  • Ability to collaborate across departments and interface with external partners and clients.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in quality control, technical services, or materials testing in the construction materials industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of mix design principles, material properties, and project compliance standards.
  • Effective interpersonal skills for technical support and customer interaction.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage competing project deadlines.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and perform occasional physical tasks in the lab or field.
  • Ability to work in office and lab environments with exposure to construction materials and testing procedures.

Preferred Certifications (Not Required):

  • ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician - Grade I
  • ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician
  • ACI Aggregate Testing Technician - Level I
  • State-specific certifications for asphalt and concrete
