Job description

As a Software Engineer at Hamlet, you'll help build the core systems that power our product - from data ingestion pipelines to customer-facing features. You'll work across the stack, collaborate closely with a small, high-impact engineering team, and contribute directly to the evolution of our platform. You'll play a central role in unifying disparate government data into a shared model and making it available through APIs, reporting tools, and new product experiences.

This role is ideal for engineers who thrive in fast-moving environments, enjoy solving complex data challenges, and want to help shape a product with real-world impact.

What You'll Do

  • Build Scrapers: Develop reliable scrapers to ingest data from local government sites without public APIs.
  • Develop Classifiers & Evals: Build classifiers and evaluation pipelines to identify governing bodies and meetings from continuous data streams.
  • Unify Data: Integrate data from diverse sources into a cohesive, structured model.
  • Design Customer-Facing Features: Build APIs, reporting tools, and product features that give customers seamless access to unified data.

Requirements

  • Full-Stack Builder: Comfortable working across the stack in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Technically Versatile: Excited to contribute to everything from pipelines to frontend features.
  • Data-Focused: Skilled at transforming unstructured data into structured, dependable formats.
  • Adaptable & Resourceful: Quick to adjust, creative in problem-solving, energized by constraints.
  • Impact-Oriented: Motivated by rapid iteration and shipping meaningful improvements.
  • Collaborative: Values teamwork, communication, and contributing to a strong engineering culture.
  • Location: Based in or willing to work hybrid out of Oakland, CA., * Experience across the stack, ideally including TypeScript and ReactJS on the frontend and Python on the backend
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS/Lambda) and relational databases (PostgreSQL)
  • Experience designing systems that unify data from multiple or unstructured sources
  • Strong communication skills and comfort working independently and collaboratively
  • Nice to have: Experience with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Codex, etc.), agentic AI agents, scaling data processing systems, or website scraping techniques
