Job description
This role will be based in our Berlin HQ. We welcome applications from candidates already in Berlin or looking to relocate here. Please also submit your CV in English. We look forward to hearing from you.
Why choose Vay
A global team of smart, motivated people from 30+ countries who love tackling hard problems and turning bold ideas into reality
Requirements
- Solid C for embedded or low-level systems
- Hands-on with hardware: reading schematics and using an oscilloscope and lab equipment, from your studies, an internship, or personal projects
- Keen to learn fast and grow into broader system ownership
We welcome candidates with 0-5 years of experience, including those coming from adjacent industries such as robotics, IoT, industrial automation, aerospace, or other safety-critical systems, who are excited to apply their skills to driverless mobility.
Nice to have (genuinely optional, you can pick these up here)
- Experience with real-time or RTOS-based systems
- Exposure to testing/validation environments: simulation, HIL, or in-vehicle
- Familiarity with automotive interfaces and standards: CAN / CAN FD, AUTOSAR, ISO 26262, MISRA-C
- Experience with automotive tooling such as Vector (CANoe/CANalyzer) and Lauterbach (TRACE32)
- Custom digital logic / FPGA / VHDL, or other low-level hardware interaction
None of these are entry requirements. If you have the fundamentals and the mindset, you'll learn the automotive specifics on the job.
How we work
About the company
We're rewriting the rules of urban mobility. At Vay, customers tap a button and a car arrives - with no one inside - powered by our world-first Remote Driving technology on real public streets.
We're live in Las Vegas and scaling fast, powered by a strategic investment of up to $410 million from Grab. Our mission is simple: replace private car ownership with a faster, cleaner, door-to-door mobility model. If you want to build something real, visible, and genuinely transformative, you'll feel right at home here.
Curious to experience Vay yourself? Use the code VAYCANDIDATE for $10 off your first trip in Las Vegas! Download the "Vay" app from the Apple or Google Play store & off you go!
What's happening at Vay
* First to roll out vehicles in both Europe and the USA on public roads without a human being inside & currently the 2nd largest commercial, driverless car fleet in the Western World.
* We've partnered with Kodiak to bring remote-driving technology to autonomous trucks in the US, showcasing our ability to integrate our system into heavy-duty commercial vehicles and expand the applications of our tech across the US.
* We've completed 10's of thousands of trips so far and are busy multiplying our Las Vegas fleet just to meet demand!
* ...And soon we'll be expanding across the US & Europe
Why this role is exciting
At Vay, cars are remotely operated in real time from our Driving Centers in Berlin and Las Vegas, something few companies worldwide have done on public roads.
As an Embedded Software Engineer, you'll work on the safety-critical software that directly controls vehicle functions: how a car accelerates, steers, brakes, monitors itself for faults, and reacts in emergencies in real time. Your code moves real physical systems on real roads.
What you'll be driving
* Design, implement, and verify embedded software for safe remote driving
* Analyse and validate system behaviour across software and hardware, and design robust solutions
* Work hands-on with the hardware: schematics, lab equipment, and the vehicle
* Improve our tooling, automation, and tests, together with the hardware, control, systems, and testing teams
