Job description

Do you love taking on new challenges and want to help us pursue our mission to make digital communication in healthcare secure and reliable? Then we are looking for you as a Platform Engineer (m/f/d) to strengthen our team!

Since our founding in 2019, Famedly has been working to digitize medical communication processes in a data-protection-compliant way and revolutionize the healthcare system. Famedly brought the first gematik-certified TI-Messenger to market to improve communication and collaboration within the healthcare sector. Famedly enables medical teams to exchange sensitive patient information, images, and other files in real time from anywhere - from medication plans and lab results to X-ray images. As a dynamic, remote-first startup based in Berlin with a growing and experienced team, we work together every day toward our vision of a healthcare system without information barriers. Famedly relies on open-source software and primarily uses and actively contributes to Matrix and FHIR.

As a Platform Engineer (m/f/d), you will be part of a talented team of developers at all levels and play a central role in building and operating the next generation of our infrastructure. We are actively migrating from an Ansible-based VM deployment model to a Kubernetes-based platform managed via GitOps. You will help design, build, and run this platform - from multi-cluster operations to developer-facing deployment pipelines - while ensuring the reliability and security our healthcare customers depend on.

Your responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate our Kubernetes platform across multiple clusters
  • Develop and maintain our GitOps workflows with Argo CD (app-of-apps model, Helm-based deployments)
  • Operate and evolve core platform services such as Harbor, OpenBao, Zitadel
  • Build and improve observability across the platform (Grafana, Mimir, Loki, Tempo, Alloy) and contribute to actionable alerting
  • Manage secrets, backups, and data services (e.g. CNPG/PostgreSQL, VolSync, S3 storage)
  • Partner with product engineering teams to migrate services from Ansible/VM-based deployments to Kubernetes and define reusable deployment standards
  • Improve developer experience through documentation, templates, golden paths, and self-service platform capabilities
  • Troubleshoot platform issues across infrastructure, networking, and application layers (2nd-level support)
  • Participate in on-call duties to ensure stable platform operations
  • Contribute to platform architecture decisions, runbooks, and operational documentation

Requirements

  • Several years of experience in infrastructure engineering, platform engineering or DevOps
  • Solid hands-on experience operating Kubernetes in production (multi-cluster experience is a plus)
  • Experience with GitOps and declarative infrastructure (e.g. Argo CD, Helm)
  • Good knowledge of networking, TLS/certificates, DNS, firewalls, and container technologies
  • Experience with monitoring and observability for distributed systems (e.g. Grafana, Prometheus/Mimir, Loki)
  • Scripting and automation skills (e.g. Nix, Bash, OpenTofu/Terraform)
  • Familiarity with CI/CD workflows and production deployment practices (progressive rollouts, rollbacks, health checks)
  • Strong problem-solving skills, clear communication, and a proactive ownership mindset
  • Very good English skills, written and spoken, * Ideally a completed IT apprenticeship or degree - or equivalent qualifications through professional experience
  • Experience with service mesh (Istio), Gateway API, and policy engines (e.g. Kyverno)
  • Experience with secrets management (e.g. OpenBao/Vault, External Secrets Operator)
  • Experience with PostgreSQL operators (e.g. CNPG) and backup/restore workflows
  • Prior involvement in large-scale infrastructure migrations
  • Experience in regulated or security-sensitive environments (e.g. healthcare)

Benefits & conditions

  • Work at a fast-growing startup in an exciting phase - Since 2019 we have grown rapidly and we have big plans ahead! Famedly brought the first gematik-certified TI-Messenger to market, and with your help we will continue to evolve it and the platform behind it.

  • Attractive conditions - A permanent contract with competitive compensation (range between 60-70k € gross/year depending on your experience), a training budget, work equipment of your choice, and 28 vacation days per year.
  • Flexible Benefits with Probonio - You receive a monthly wellbeing budget that you can use for vouchers from a wide range of food, mobility, retail, and lifestyle partners or for a discounted membership with Urban Sports Club.
