Job description

The constant requirement for new, better, and more complex products means that we are looking for an Embedded BSP Software Engineer to join our team, based in either our Theale or Colchester office. The Software Engineering team is responsible for bringing our computing platforms to life, developing and maintaining Board Support Packages (BSPs), firmware, and supporting software required for system operation.

You will work at the boundary between hardware and software, enabling high-performance embedded platforms and supporting them from early bring-up through to deployment.

What will I be delivering?

  • Design, develop, and maintain Linux BSPs for high-performance embedded compute platforms.
  • Develop and integrate Linux kernel drivers and platform support, including:
  1. PCIe-based devices
  2. FPGA-based peripherals and custom hardware
  3. Networking and other high-speed interfaces
  • Configure and maintain Linux distributions (e.g. Ubuntu, Red Hat, Rocky Linux) for deployment on bespoke hardware.
  • Develop user-space tools and utilities to support in-house drivers and platform features
  • Support performance optimisation across the full software stack
  • Work across multidisciplinary engineering teams:
  1. During the design phase to help define product requirements
  2. During board bring-up and integration to enable and debug prototype hardware
  3. During design proving to validate system performance and stability
  • Debug complex issues across hardware, firmware, and software layers
  • Support challenging customer issues escalated to engineering, delivering complete system-level solutions

Most of the platforms are complex, high-performance systems, so an appreciation of hardware is essential for success in this role.

Requirements

  • Strong experience developing and maintaining Board Support Packages (BSPs), particularly for Linux-based embedded systems
  • Proficient in Embedded C programming on x86 and/or ARM architectures
  • Experience configuring, porting, and debugging Linux kernels and platform software
  • Hands-on experience with hardware bring-up and system integration
  • Practical experience developing device drivers for interfaces such as: PCIe, graphics configuration, Ethernet, USB, UART, I2C, SPI, and GPIO
  • Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills in complex hardware/software environments
  • Confidence working from schematics, datasheets, and processor technical reference manuals
  • Experience using debugging tools such as serial interfaces, JTAG, and lab instrumentation
  • A structured, methodical approach to debugging and system integration
  • Experience customising Linux distributions (e.g. Ubuntu, Red Hat, Rocky Linux) for embedded platforms
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English
  • A good understanding of software lifecycle from inception to in-life support
  • Use of version control systems (e.g. Git)

Benefits & conditions

  • 25 days holidays + bank holidays and holiday purchase scheme.
  • Annual profit share bonus.
  • Cycle to work, Home & Tech and car salary sacrifice schemes.
  • Death in service benefit & income protection.
  • Employee assistance programme and virtual GP.
  • Employee referral scheme.
  • Enhanced parental leave.
  • Generous company pension scheme with up to 10% employer contribution.
  • One paid volunteering day per year.
  • Private Health Insurance through Bupa.
  • YuLife wellbeing app.
