Job description
We are responsible for the end-to-end digital and physical Guest experience for all technology and digital-led initiatives across the Attractions & Entertainment, Food & Beverage, Resorts & Transportation and Merchandise lines of business as well as other initiatives including MyDisneyExperience and Hey, Disney!
This role sits in the Retail & Restaurant Commerce Technology organization within Technology & Digital for Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products. It works closely with a diverse team of engineers and service owners from across the company.
What You'll Do
-
Design, build, and maintain backend services and RESTful APIs using Java and Spring Boot.
-
Model, persist, and query data using JPA/Hibernate against relational databases (MariaDB, MySQL, Oracle, or similar), including writing efficient SQL.
-
Build and integrate event-driven components using pub/sub messaging and queues (e.g.,Kafka, RabbitMQ, or cloud-native equivalents) to support asynchronous, decoupled workflows.
-
Contribute to front-end features, primarily in React, when a task calls for full-stack ownership.
-
Participate in the full Agile/Scrum lifecycle: sprint planning, daily stand-ups, backlog refinement, retrospectives, and demos.
-
Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code; review teammates' pull requests and respond to feedback on your own.
-
Debug and resolve production issues, including performance, reliability, and scalability problems.
-
Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to translate requirements into technical solutions.
-
Contribute to technical design discussions and document your approach for moderately complex components.
-
Mentor junior engineers and share knowledge through code reviews, pairing, and informal tech talks.
Who You Are:
-
Your day will typically start with checking messages and PR notifications, followed by a daily stand-up with your team. Most engineers split their time between reviewing open pull requests, focused coding on features or bug fixes, and testing changes locally.
-
Afternoons often include sprint planning, design discussions, or syncs with product and design partners. Throughout the week, you'll move between independent implementation work and collaborative problem-solving with your team.
Requirements
-
A minimum of 3 years of professional software engineering experience, with a focus on backend development.
-
Comfortable navigating systems with CLI or terminal commands.
-
Strong proficiency in modern Java (21+) and the Spring / Spring Boot framework.
-
Experience with JPA/Hibernate and relational databases (MariaDB, MySQL, Oracle, or similar).
-
Solid understanding of RESTful API design and best practices.
-
Familiarity with event-driven architecture and messaging systems (pub/sub, queues).
-
Working knowledge of Agile/Scrum practices.
-
Some experience with front-end web development, ideally React.
-
Comfort with Git, code review workflows, and automated testing (unit and integration).
-
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently on well-scoped problems.
-
Clear written and verbal communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to Have:
-
Experience with PHP or Go.
-
Hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor or Claude Code.
-
Exposure to CI/CD pipelines, Docker, or Kubernetes.
-
Experience with a cloud platform (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
Education:
- Bachelor's degree or international equivalent in Computer Science, Info Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience.
