General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for an Advanced Interaction Designer - remote. This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation's core defense/intelligence services and systems. General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.
What You'll Do
- Create graphical user interfaces that meet military standards (MIL-STD-1472), translating complex requirements into elegant, user-centered design solutions that are safe and effective
- Work with software development teams, systems engineers, and stakeholders to improve designs and systems based on usability principles
- Interview subject matter experts and users; produce personas, workflows/journey maps, and other artifacts to inform design decisions
- Use interface prototyping tools to create low- to high-fidelity wireframes and clickable prototypes across all design phases
- Apply expertise in usability and interaction design principles across all aspects of visual and interface design
- Defend design decisions with compelling, research-based rationale and present findings through engaging reports and stakeholder presentations
- Design development-ready icons and graphics; identify creative alternatives when barriers arise
- Remote work environment; Prefer proximity to a GDMS site - such as Pittsburgh PA or Scottsdale AZ; travel up to 20% to collaborate with clients, teams, and test sites
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a related specialized area or field or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience is required plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience., Department of Defense SECRET security clearance eligibility is required at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required., * Expertise in designing for compliance with complex requirements, with a strong understanding of interaction, design, and usability principles
- Strong knowledge of design systems, optimizing human performance, and evaluating software designs
- Expertise with wireframing and prototyping tools (e.g., Axure RP, Figma, Sketch) and Adobe CC (especially Illustrator/Photoshop)
- Excellent communication skills - verbal, written, and visual - including the ability to present findings and defend difficult decisions to teams and leadership in a constructive manner
- A portfolio demonstrating your design work, the challenges you've overcome, and your passion for making things better for users
- Ability to work independently, make informed decisions with minimal direction, accept constructive feedback, and thrive in a team environment
- Ability to obtain a Secret security clearance (U.S. Citizenship required)
What Sets You Apart
- Experience in defense contractor roles or U.S. Navy programs
- Identifies and leverages AI as a creative and analytical partner - from accelerating prototyping cycles and conducting contextual research in novel domains, to intuitively knowing how to prompt, iterate, and collaborate with AI tools to push design work further
- Experience planning and conducting user research
- Experience with web, mobile, or desktop application development, including working knowledge of CSS and HTML
- Experience working in an Agile development environment
- Freehand drawing/sketching skills for rapid ideation
- Proximity to a relevant GDMS site in PA, AZ, FL or others
