Job description

GrayMatter Robotics runs physical robots at customer production sites, maintains a growing government enclave, and supports an engineering team that moves fast. Right now, too much of the IT work that keeps all of that running is falling on a DevOps engineer who should be focused on infrastructure, a QA engineer who shouldn't be configuring machines at all, and senior engineers who are getting pulled into IT requests they shouldn't have to touch.

We need one person to own that surface. Someone who can walk into an ambiguous IT situation, figure out what needs to happen, and drive it to resolution without needing to be managed through it.

That is the IT Systems Engineer. You will be the go-to for IT across the organization, covering internal infrastructure, fleet management, customer site support, and government enclave compliance. The role spans a wide range of domains on purpose. The right person is not a deep specialist. They are someone a few years into their career who has built real range across Linux, networking, and scripting, and who gets energy from variety rather than being slowed down by it. Think less "I own the firewall" and more "whatever IT problem lands here, I will figure it out."

What You Will Do

Shadow and document existing systems in the first few weeks, then take increasing ownership across:

  • Serve as the primary IT escalation point, reducing reliance on DevOps and engineering teams for routine and recurring IT requests
  • Own PC fleet management, including provisioning, imaging, Ansible-based configuration, and Teamviewer enrollment for both internal and customer site machines
  • Troubleshoot and resolve GPU driver issues and kernel update problems that cause production downtime at customer sites, then build SOPs so the fix is never tribal knowledge again
  • Support internal IT requests from all teams, including tool integrations, access management, onboarding and offboarding provisioning, and network configuration
  • Assist with government enclave maintenance, including compliance logging, access control, and working with our enclave contractor to reduce the admin overhead that currently falls on senior engineers
  • Own the IT intake process, including standing up a clear ticketing workflow and making it easy for anyone within the organization to know where to route a request
  • Work with DevOps on DevOps-adjacent tasks (CI runner uptime, VPN setup, DNS, internal tooling deployments) without needing hand-holding
  • Field customer site IT support, especially for activation machines, license servers, and network misconfigurations that require fast turnaround
  • Eventually reduce and potentially replace our reliance on our current external IT contractor for day-to-day tasks

Export Control Requirements

In order to comply with the export regulations of the United States Government, it is required that the applicant must fall under one of the following categories: (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful permanent resident (i.e. current ), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. 1158.

Requirements

  • 2 to 5 years of hands-on experience in IT systems administration, infrastructure, or a related technical role
  • Strong working knowledge of Linux (Ubuntu preferred)
  • Networking fundamentals, including ability to diagnose and resolve common configuration issues
  • Some experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible
  • Basic scripting in Python, Bash, or PowerShell for task automation and workflow improvements
  • Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Ability to troubleshoot independently, communicate blockers clearly, and drive issues to resolution without being asked twice
  • Comfortable working onsite at our Carson, CA office with some travel to customer sites, * Experience supporting both internal employees and external production environments
  • Familiarity with MDM or RMM tools such as NinjaOne, JAMF, or Kandji
  • Exposure to AWS (even light usage like storage, EC2, IAM basics)
  • Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as CMMC, NIST 800-171, or ITAR, particularly in enclave or government IT contexts
  • Experience with monitoring and alerting tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or ELK
  • Track record of writing documentation and SOPs that other people can actually follow cold

About the company

GrayMatter Robotics is a well-capitalized Physical AI company headquartered in Los Angeles, building Factory SuperIntelligence (FSI) through systems that learn, adapt, and develop genuine process intelligence across every part they touch. Our robots take on the tedious, hazardous, and ergonomically demanding work that has kept manufacturing dependent on a shrinking skilled workforce, delivering superhuman performance. Robotics has a demo problem. GMR doesn't. Our systems are in active production today, adapting autonomously to real geometries, real materials, and real process variation without reprogramming. We deliver our system through a Robots-as-a-Service (RaaS) model that converts capital expenditure into an operating subscription, making Physical AI accessible to the manufacturers who need it most. We hire people who want to solve hard physical problems at an industrial scale.
